Special Conditions

This post is subject to a probationary period of 6 months, upon successful completion of which it will become permanent.

A full DBS Certificate via the Disclosure and Barring Service will be required for this post.


Key Duties

This job description is a guide to the duties you will be expected to perform immediately on your appointment. These may change in the future in line with the strategic direction and development of the College.

1. To prepare workshop tools, equipment and resources ready for practical sessions in Construction, as requested in advance by the tutors;
2. To assist with the security and storage of specialist tools, equipment and resources, assisting with the safe transportation of equipment for use within or outside the College;
3. To provide technical assistance to lecturers during practical workshop sessions;
4. To liaise with lecturers to supervise practical sessions in the workshop when assessments are taking place;
5. To ensure that all workshops, machinery, tools and equipment are maintained and kept safe and tidy, in line with Health and Safety requirements;
6. To maintain accurate workshop records and stock control and raise orders for materials and equipment as required;
7. To maintain an accurate tool and equipment inventory and implement a replacement or renewal policy, in line with College procedures;
8. To dispose of waste materials in accordance with established guidelines;
9. To administer and implement risk assessment procedures in conjunction with the Sector Leader, Head of Department and relevant staff in line with Health and Safety requirements;
10. To be aware of all Health and Safety requirements and precautions within the practical workshops and assist staff in the implementation of safe procedures and good practice;
11. To ensure that the locations you are responsible for are professional in appearance and inspection ready;
12. To work as an effective team member within the department and wider college;
13. To instruct students in line with learning and curriculum plans, designed with and for them, in conjunction with designated programme tutors;
14. To support and provide educational guidance to students through the learning process and assessment activities;
15. To help students develop modern, safe working practices and behaviours across all aspects of their learning, including technical and employability skills;
16. To assess, monitor and mark student practical activities within learning sessions;
17. To assist students with action planning and recording achievement where appropriate;
18. To organise, adapt, and maintain learning materials and/or equipment;
19. To utilise learning resources effectively to enhance the student experience;
20. To attend curriculum area, college, and other relevant meetings;
21. To implement the college’s policies on equality, diversity, and safeguarding to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all learners and staff;
22. To assist in other areas within the construction department;
23. To participate in the college’s appraisal scheme and undertake professional development;
24. To pursue a teaching qualification if necessary and engage in other professional development activities as deemed appropriate;
25. To perform any other duties reasonably requested, commensurate with the grade and status.


Person Specific

The successful candidate will meet all the essential requirements and some or all of the desirable ones listed below:


ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

* Qualified to Level 2 (GCSE Grade A*-C or equivalent) in English and Maths or willing to work towards this within a set timeframe;
* Relevant vocational qualification at Level 2 or above;
* Level 3 Teaching Award in Education and Training or willingness to obtain it;
* Experience of maintaining, setting up, and using machinery in the relevant vocational area;
* Effective organisational and prioritisation skills;
* Ability to work collaboratively with staff and students of varying abilities and needs;
* Effective communication skills with staff, students, and external contacts;
* Physical ability to move, lift, or carry equipment and work at heights;
* Current First Aid at Work qualification or willingness to obtain;
* Self-motivated, enthusiastic, with good time management;
* Knowledge of stock control and inventory management;
* Understanding of Health and Safety legislation, safe working practices, and risk assessment;
* Experience of instructing or teaching;
* Ability to work independently and on own initiative;
* Strong organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines;
* Effective team working skills;
* Good interpersonal skills;
* Flexibility to work evenings or weekends as needed;
* Valid driving licence and access to insured vehicle;
* Up-to-date IT skills and ability to process orders and respond to requests via email;
* Willingness to support staff in other areas and undertake ongoing professional development.
