Neurodevelopmental Nurse

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Neuro-Developmental Nurse / Senior Learning Disabilities Nurse.
You will have a passion for working with children and young people and will work with a team that provides support and management of children with severe or complex learning disabilities or neuro‑developmental disabilities, including but not limited to ASD, ADHD, and global developmental delay.
The team delivers services to children and young people across the borough of Halton (Widnes and Runcorn). The vacancy is a full‑time role of 37.5 hours, however the team welcomes applications from nurses who may wish to work part‑time or on a job‑share basis. Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS FT has a well‑established flexible working policy to support a positive work‑life balance.
The Child Development Centre offers free parking. Mileage and toll bridge expenses can be claimed for duties requiring a crossing of the bridges.

Main duties of the job

Job Purpose
To work as part of a Neurodevelopmental Nursing Team (NDNT) that provides support and management of children with severe or complex learning disabilities or neuro‑developmental disabilities, including but not limited to autism, ADHD, and global developmental delay.
To work closely with community paediatricians, children and young people, parents/carers, general practitioners, schools and other partners to develop a greater understanding of the conditions and facilitate appropriate support for children, young people and their families.
The post holder will work autonomously whilst being part of a nursing team that provides a community‑based service undertaken in the Halton Child Development Centre, GP surgeries, other clinical centres, Family Hubs and at home.
The post holder will be an experienced nurse with strong clinical leadership and demonstrate an ability to further develop service provision in this area of clinical practice.
Job responsibilities
Clinical
* Assess, plan and implement packages of care for children and young people up to 19 years of age with a diagnosed severe or complex learning disability or neuro‑developmental disability (including ADHD and autism).
* Assess the needs, including challenging or complex behaviour and sleep difficulties, of a child/young person, and plan, implement and evaluate individualised care in collaboration with the child/young person, family and other involved agencies/professionals.
* Provide advice, support and information to the child/young person and their family at the early stages of diagnosis, when needs change or during transition periods; also signpost and/or refer to other sources of support including voluntary and community assets.
* Provide skills and strategies for young people/parents or carers to manage their own/their child's long‑term condition.
* Promote the health and wellbeing of children and young people at every contact.
* Understand and knowledge of medications prescribed for ADHD and/or sleep difficulties; support medication concordance to improve outcomes for children and young people.
* Develop care pathways in line with NICE guidance as appropriate to the development of the service and in consultation with all key stakeholders.
* Run nurse‑led clinics; demonstrate the ability to work as an autonomous practitioner including the recording of clinical observations, the ongoing assessment of treatment effectiveness, monitoring compliance with clinical practice and NICE guidance.
* Offer joint working and specialist advice to other members of the multidisciplinary team and external agencies to implement care plans, packages of care and to evaluate outcomes.
* Liaise and share information with other agencies, with appropriate consent and in accordance with data protection guidelines, to support the needs of the child or young person safely and effectively.
* Develop, run and evaluate group support for children, young people with severe or complex learning disability or neuro‑developmental disability and their families/carers.
* Ensure that clients are actively involved in all care planning and decision making pursuant to Fraser Guidelines and Mental Capacity Act 2005.
* Contribute to statutory processes such as Education Health & Care Plans as required.
* Use high‑level communication skills throughout all duties within the clinical role including verbal, non‑verbal and written formats.
* Make appropriate clinical decisions following assessment; seek support and advice from a peer, manager or named safeguarding nurse as appropriate.
* Support families through transition processes from pre‑school to education, primary to secondary school and secondary to adult services where appropriate.
* Discharge from the service appropriately, agreeing a point of closure with the young person, parent or carers and informing relevant professionals. Alternatively follow Trust policy for children who are not brought for health appointments.
Managerial
* Show a strong commitment to team working, demonstrating respect and consideration to other team members and colleagues in partner agencies.
* Attend and provide leadership in team meetings and confidently represent the service at relevant Trust and external partner meetings.
* Act as senior nurse, acting as deputy to the Team Leader when appropriate and offering direction, support and supervision to the skill‑mix team.
* Effectively manage a caseload, prioritise clinical demands, delegate appropriately to other members of the team and act as a care coordinator for the service.
* Identify, manage and review risks through comprehensive risk assessments when necessary.
* Deal with concerns and complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible in line with Bridgewater Trust policy.
* Learn from incidents, complaints and user feedback to improve the quality of the service delivery.
* Understand service/team key performance indicators and contribute to the accurate and timely collection of statistical data.
* Participate in departmental clinical audit and research as part of continuous quality improvement.
Leadership
* Lead and manage quality improvements, encouraging others to recognise the need for change, developing a shared vision, inspiring and motivating other team members.
* Provide expert clinical leadership by engaging and contributing to the development of the team and the service.
* Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidelines relevant to own area of work.
* Adhere to the Code professional standards and behaviour for nurses as required by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC).
* Develop a working knowledge of relevant procedures including safeguarding children, SEN procedures, working with vulnerable adults and other legal frameworks.
Education & Teaching
* Develop, deliver and evaluate tailored awareness training for ADHD, autism and other related conditions to members of the multidisciplinary team and partner agencies.
* Develop, deliver and evaluate group training to young people, parents/carers for ADHD, autism and other related conditions.
* Act as mentor/preceptor to new staff and participate, where appropriate, in developing the skills and potential of colleagues.
* Contribute to the development of parent/client information ensuring this is relevant, accessible and up to date in a written and digital format.
Continuing Professional Development
* Participate in individual performance review, ensuring that the objectives set reflect the service and organisational plans.
* Identify personal/professional development within a performance review; attend relevant training, undertake development activities to maintain and enhance skills and knowledge required for up‑to‑date registration.
* Demonstrate the ability to reflect on practice with peers, clinical supervisor, manager to identify own strengths and development needs.
* Attend and engage in clinical and safeguarding supervision.
* Use evidence‑based practice, maintain skills and knowledge in accordance with current evidence‑based research, best practice and Trust policies/guidance.
Record Keeping/Records Management
* Maintain up‑to‑date written records in line with professional and organisational requirements.
* Maintain strict confidentiality for all clients according to Trust policy.
* Maintain record‑keeping skills and knowledge by undertaking regular training and participating in the Trust‑wide record‑keeping audit.
* Adhere to Bridgewater and local service guidance in relation to the management of records, including storage and transfer.
Physical
* Demonstrate knowledge in moving/handling clients with disabilities.
* Use a range of techniques appropriate for those with severe and profound disabilities, including symbol systems, alternative communication equipment and other resources in the provision of support to families.

Person Specification
Experience
* Significant experience of working with children and young people (CYP) with learning disabilities (LD) and neuro‑developmental disabilities.
* Experience of working within a community setting and working independently.
* Experience working in a multi‑disciplinary and multi‑agency environment.
* Leadership experience to achieve sustained service improvements.
* Experience in designing & delivering training to service users and/or professionals.
* Experience of involving service users in a meaningful way to shape service initiatives and delivery.
* Experience monitoring ADHD medication compliance and side effects.
* Experience of clinical audit & continuous quality improvement.
Job Specific Requirements
* The ability to travel independently across the Trust.

Qualifications
* Registered Learning Disability Nurse or Registered Mental Health Nurse or Registered Children’s Nurse.
* Evidence of additional training or professional development in neuro‑developmental disabilities and/or behaviour management.
* Qualification or equivalent experience in leadership.

Skills & Knowledge
* Knowledge of The Code and nursing standard.
* Highly competent in working therapeutically with CYP with learning difficulties/neurodevelopmental difficulties who are experiencing complex challenges by providing a comprehensive assessment, plan, intervention and evaluation of care packages.
* Ability to independently make clinical decisions, generate treatment options, plan and review treatment programme.
* High level interpersonal skills including communication (verbal & written), observation, listening and empathy skills.
* Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills.
* Knowledge of national policies and guidance (relevant to the client group).

* Working knowledge of Family Support model and/or common assessment framework.
