Biomedical Scientist Team Manager Band 7

Histology Team Manager, nominally RIE based

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

Please note: we anticipate a high level of interest in this position and may close the vacancy early once a sufficient amount of applications are received. Therefore, please make sure you complete and submit your application at an early stage.

We will fully support disabled candidates, and candidates with long-term conditions or who are neurodivergent by making reasonable adjustments to our recruitment policy and practices.

To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country. This permission is, without exception, granted by the UK Visa and Immigrations Service. Further information on what NHS Scotland Boards are required to do to check this as well as what your responsibilities include can be found in the further information for this vacancy.

Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, this post may require a different level of criminal records check done than is currently the case. If the post is assessed as a "regulated role", your appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. If there is any change to what is currently required, this will be confirmed by either the Hiring Manager or the Recruitment Team. For more details on these changes please visit: .

Applications are invited from suitably experienced and motivated individuals with excellent knowledge and practical skills and experience in Cellular Pathology. Cellular Pathology is one department across two sites within Edinburgh. Cellular Pathology in Lothian consists of well-equipped laboratories, with a combined workload of over 60,000 requests annually. The Department is UKAS accredited.

The RIE is the main Histology Laboratory hub with Dissection, Processing, Special Stains, Immunohistochemistry and Renal IF, Frozen Sections, Paediatric and Neuropathology base, Diagnostic Cytology and Digital Pathology. Cellular Pathology in Lothian is the only Cellular Pathology site in Scotland with on-call requirements due to the Scottish Liver Transplant Unit, there is also support for Renal Transplants. Staff also support the Mohs clinic at the Lauriston site.

The Team Manager Post will be primarily Histology Main Laboratory based i.e. tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, internal quality control, frozen sections and support to digital pathology; support is given from this Team Manager to other areas such as Reception/Diagnostic Cytology, when these area Team Managers are on leave. There are opportunities for continued or new specialisation in e.g. Dissection or attending Mohs clinic.

The successful candidates will demonstrate strong leadership qualities, organisational, training skills and must have experience of managing staff, experience, and evidence as a band 6 specialist BMS is acceptable. As a Team Manager you will organise laboratory management meetings, support training and staff development, quality management and support external quality assurance (NEQAS), audit and other aspects of clinical governance.

On-call roster is a requirement for the RIE Team Manager Post. This is to support NHS Lothian transplant requirements; currently there is a 1 in 12-day roster; call outs are variable but there is good communication between the transplant team and pathologists and good notice is given to BMS colleagues and where possible call outs usually result in an extended day or an afternoon or morning at the weekend. There are weeks without a BMS being called out.

Public Holiday cover is required (not Christmas Day or New Year Day) and most RIE staff at band 7, will participate within this rotation, as do band 6 Biomedical Scientist colleagues.

Candidates must be HCPC registered, Educated to SCQF level 11 e.g. MSc or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma, specialising in Histology.

All band 7 team manager posts are pan-Lothian; successful applicants will be nominally based as indicated per post but depending on circumstances and Department requirement post sites could be changed to an alternative base e.g. to cover leave.

Previous work in an NHS Histopathology Laboratory is essential, however where necessary training will be supported.

The successful applicants would be expected to participate in Continuing Professional Development to maintain HCPC registration.
