Overview
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
The Role
Glasgow Clinical Research Facility (GCRF) is an NHS & University of Glasgow (UoG) Facility set up to support clinical research across NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHS GGC).
GCRF Staff comprise a multi‑disciplinary team working together to provide comprehensive clinical research support to investigators from study start‑up to archiving. The study portfolio includes early phase/first in human studies, experimental and advanced therapy studies, to large population/public health studies. The core disciplines within the team are:
* Clinical (Research Nurses/Medical)
* Project Management
* Education, Training and Quality
* Administration
The clinical facilities are at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus (adult and children’s facility) and Glasgow Royal Infirmary with satellite units in Gartnavel General Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Dental Hospital. GCRF is committed to supporting research projects across NHS GGC in primary, secondary and tertiary care.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
Fixed Term, 2 years – Full time
Shift Pattern – Monday – Friday 08:30 to 16:30
Base location – Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
Key Responsibilities
* Self‑managed workload balancing demands from multiple research teams, adjusting plans as needed through regular communication.
* Laboratory operations management, including receiving, identifying, registering, processing, storing, and shipping biological samples in line with GCRF procedures.
* Technical and documentation support for clinical trials, including maintaining trial‑specific paperwork and supporting specialised laboratory procedures.
* Coordination of clinical studies, ensuring staff are updated on study progress and that sample logistics (including dry‑ice shipments) run smoothly.
* Execution of protocol‑driven tasks, such as sample handling for internal and external labs, trial‑specific tests, and adherence to GCP/GLP and UK regulatory standards.
* Maintenance of laboratory equipment, ensuring calibration, safety, and availability for project needs.
* Data collection and management, accurately collating clinical trial data in both paper and electronic formats.
* Collaboration within multidisciplinary teams to support high‑quality patient care and uphold Health & Safety protocols.
* Monitoring and reporting, identifying issues that may affect project delivery and escalating them appropriately.
* Oversight of laboratory storage capacity and providing training to staff and researchers on equipment use when required.
Personal Requirements
* Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of all job‑related processes and responsibilities.
* Engage in ongoing learning, including training courses and study meetings to deepen understanding of research projects.
* Identify personal development needs and seek appropriate training opportunities.
* Work safely and responsibly, minimising risks to health, safety, and security.
Knowledge, Training, Qualifications and/or Experience Required to Do the Job
* 3 Highers at Grade C or above, which should include either Chemistry or Biology together with Maths.
* SVQ3 in relevant science subject.
* Completion of a modern apprenticeship in life sciences.
* Educated to SCQF level 7 in a healthcare‑related subject.
* Evidence of good numeracy and literacy skills.
* Knowledge of laboratory techniques applicable to sample handling and processing, including for example serum, plasma, urine, normal/tumour tissue and other fluids as appropriate.
* Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
* Knowledge of relevant Health and Safety issues, COSHH regulations and willingness to develop and maintain knowledge in other relevant regulations (e.g. Human Tissue Act).
* Competent in communicating with co‑workers by both oral and written means.
* Ability to prioritise/schedule activities and to work without supervision.
* Good technical ability and dexterity.
* Ability to work out of hours as necessary.

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part‑time working hours will be reduced on a pro‑rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
