Overview

Band 7 Delivery Suite Ward Manager at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The closing date is 30 October 2025

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a welcoming, inclusive passionate team. In this role you will be expected to demonstrate strong leadership and clinical skills. You will work closely with the Intrapartum Services Matron and the existing labour ward coordinators, to ensure that the Maternity Unit is operationally safe, effective and well led. You will have a sound knowledge base, and a passion for promoting team culture which supports and encourages innovators and motivators.

The role will require you to manage a team of dedicated midwives, and understand the demands of the wider maternity service. You will demonstrate a high level of communication and organizational skills, and be a key stakeholder for the development and management of the individuals within the team. You will support high standards of midwifery and obstetric-led care are provided at all times, to optimise the safety of women and their families.

The maternity unit environment is both unpredictable and challenging. The Delivery Suite Ward Manager will be faced with many competing demands for attention and will be expected to exercise excellent judgement in dealing with both clinical and interpersonal challenges.


Main duties of the job

* To promote an environment where safety for the mother/woman and baby is paramount.
* The have continuing responsibility for leadership, supervision and management of midwives or nurses, students and clinical support workers ensuring delivery of a professional, efficient and cost-effective service..
* To assist the Senior Management Team in the safe and effective running of the maternity unit both in and outside of office hours, including appropriate escalation to the on call Midwifery Manager where required.
* To be a professional role model for others, demonstrating competent and accountable clinical practice, forming good relationships with women and their families, and presenting a positive image at all times.
* To share the vision of enhancing cross site working to support patient safety, shared learning, and positive working relationships.
* To challenge poor practice, with appropriate channels of support, and ultimately to instigate any necessary competency/disciplinary procedures.
* Provide professional midwifery leadership and expert advice to midwives and all other health professionals, working collaboratively and with compassionate leadership.
* Ensure effective, safe and responsive day to day management of the maternity unit as a whole, enabling staff to be able to give high quality care and supporting patient flow through the unit

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Registered midwife (Diploma/Degree) (E)
* Teaching/mentorship qualifications (E)
* Evidence of a minimum of 5 years CPD (E)
* Well documented and up to date CPD portfolio (E)
* Recent evidence of neonatal life support (E)
* Diploma/Degree in Health Related subjects and Certificate in Management (D)
* Completed managerial course or working towards (D)
* Hold New born Examination Certificate (D)


Experience

* Specialist knowledge across a range of procedures pertaining to delivery suite and maternity services (E)
* Extensive knowledge of all areas of maternity services developed throughout continuing professional development (E)
* Recent experience in high risk Antenatal/Postnatal Care and expert knowledge of obstetric complications (E)
* Knowledge of budgetary and resource management (E)
* Knowledge and ability to organise and prioritise workload within shift and allocate patients to appropriately skilled team member (E)
* Well-developed IT skills and presentation Extensive knowledge of UNICEF and BFI and infant feeding (E)
* Ability to supervise juniors on a day to day basis (E)
* Excellent presentation, teaching, verbal and written skills (D)
