Research Scientist in an instrument R&D team at a major MS vendor.
The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting and supporting research projects that advance the field of biological mass spectrometry. The role will suit a hands-on experimentalist with a strong background in design, build and test of charge particle optics instrumentation. Familiarity with mechanical design and high-vacuum assemblies, together with a good understanding of ion optics, electronics and control software will be an advantage. You will work closely with senior researchers and multidisciplinary teams to develop and apply new mass spectrometry technologies for the analysis of complex biological and chemical samples. The role requires good communication skills, an affinity for teamwork, attention to detail and a passion for scientific discovery.
Key Responsibilities:
* Research and Development:
o Develop and validate new mass spectrometry technologies and protocols to improve system performance and meet future analytical challenges.
o Support the successful execution of research projects, ensuring high-quality data collection and analysis.
* Technical Proficiency:
o Operate and maintain mass spectrometry instruments, including sample preparation, calibration, and routine maintenance.
o Analyse and interpret mass spectrometry data using appropriate software and statistical tools.
o Troubleshoot issues related to instrumentation and data quality, ensuring accurate and reproducible results.
* Collaboration:
o Work closely with other researchers, including chemists, biologists, and bioinformaticians, to integrate mass spectrometry data with other analytical techniques.
o Participate in team meetings, contributing to the planning and completion of research activities. o Collaborate with external partners and stakeholders when necessary to support research goals.
* Documentation and Reporting:
o Maintain detailed and accurate records of all experiments, procedures, and results.
o Prepare reports, summaries, and presentations of research findings for internal and external communications.
o Participate in the preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
* Continuous Learning:
o Stay updated on the latest developments in mass spectrometry technology and literature.
o Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance technical skills and knowledge.

Education:
Master’s degree (MSc) or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical Science, or a related field with a focus on charged particle optics instrumentation.
Experience:
Experience in mass spectrometry, including hands-on experience with instruments such as LC-MS, GC-MS, or MALDI-TOF, is desirable.
Familiarity with sample preparation techniques and data analysis methods in mass spectrometry.
Previous experience in a research setting, particularly in an academic or industrial laboratory, is preferred.

Proficiency in using software for data analysis and interpretation.
