Head of Engineering — Digital Banking — 12 Month FTC - REMOTE
The Company
Our client, a digital bank operating at the intersection of traditional financial services and digital assets, is seeking a Head of Engineering to lead its technology function through a critical phase of growth and modernisation. The environment offers a rare combination: the build pace of a fintech with the regulatory substance of a licensed institution.
The Role
This is a hands-on engineering leadership position. You will lead a lean team of engineers, drive engineering standards and delivery discipline, and stay close enough to the work to contribute directly when needed. This is a player-coach mandate, not a management layer.
As a partner to the CTO, you will translate enterprise architecture into detailed design, engineering practices, and execution.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and mentor a small engineering team across day-to-day delivery
* Drive code quality, standards, patterns, and engineering governance
* Contribute hands-on, reviewing, designing, and coding where appropriate
* Support the move toward stronger compliance and engineering controls
* Translate technical direction into delivery across payments, digital banking, and digital asset initiatives
* Engage business stakeholders clearly and credibly
What We're Looking For
* A genuine software engineering background, you started as a developer and still think like one
* Experience with robust, object-oriented or functional languages (C#, Java, Go, Kotlin or similar)
* Strong understanding of engineering patterns, scalable system design, and what good looks like
* Pragmatic, not academic. You use the right tool for the job and keep things simple
* Experience leading engineers in lean, build-oriented environments
* Extensive career experience in regulated financial services, banking, payments, and fintech infrastructure
* Comfortable leading execution in smaller organisations where you must be a ’Swiss Army knife\"
Particularly Relevant Backgrounds
Challenger banks, payments fintechs, digital asset platforms, transaction banking infrastructure, or lean engineering teams within regulated financial services.
What This Is Not
This role is not suited to career people-managers without strong technical foundations, technical project managers, or infrastructure/DevOps-led profiles without application engineering depth.
This is a 12-Month FTC, paying up to £150,000 + package
