A specialist primary provision in South Shields is seeking a full-time SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils aged 7–11 with autism spectrum conditions and associated learning needs. This is a structured, calm environment where consistency and patience drive progress. The Type of Person They’re Looking For They are seeking someone: • Calm under pressure • Confident supporting communication difficulties • Consistent with behaviour expectations • Patient with repetition and routine • Proactive rather than passive in lessons Pupils respond best to adults who are steady and emotionally regulated. The Pupils • Ages 7–11 • All have EHCPs • Diagnoses include ASD and moderate learning difficulties • Wide range of reading and communication levels Small classes allow meaningful support. Daily Expectations & Routine Morning Arrival Visual timetable review, emotional check-in and structured start. In-Class Support • 1:1 phonics and literacy intervention • Maths scaffolding using practical resources • Supporting transitions between activities • Live feedback during written work Lunch Staff sit with pupils and model social interaction. Behaviour & Boundaries • Dysregulation managed calmly • Swearing redirected • Clear stepped behaviour system • Team Teach training offered long term Experience & Pay SEN experience desirable but not essential.
