Resident Doctor - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)

Applications are invited for the post of OMFS Trust Doctor within the Surgical Division at Sunderland for 12 months. The post is based at Sunderland Royal Hospital and the department oversees both elective and on‑call commitments to hospitals south of the Tyne, including Shotley Bridge, South Tyneside and University Hospital of North Durham. The role may occasionally require visits to surrounding hospitals for surgical lists and to attend emergencies. This post is first on‑call and operates at the level of a Dental Core Trainee Level 2 (previously known as a Senior House Officer). It is suitable for a dentally qualified candidate or a medically qualified candidate with an interest in a career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
The OMFS Department provides a comprehensive range of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including oral and facial malignancy with microvascular reconstruction and subsequent rehabilitation, facial deformity, hard and soft tissue trauma, salivary gland surgery, surgical dermatology and dento‑alveolar surgery.
There is formal induction and training for all new staff covering both OMFS and ENT work prior to commencing the post, which is compulsory. Cross cover with ENT is arranged for on‑call duties.
Time is provided for attendance at courses and for study or to take examinations identified in your Personal Development Plan.
Main duties of the job
Clinical:
* Theatre lists
* Ward work to provide care for pre‑ and post‑operative patients
* Medical examination of patients
* Attending to emergency patients presenting to A&E in Sunderland
* Dento‑alveolar and minor oral surgery
* On‑call cover, including cross‑cover with ENT on a joint rota during out‑of‑hours
Educational activities include attendance of the local F1/F2 postgraduate teaching programme, preparation and presentation of an audit project, and encouragement to publish papers and attend national and international meetings.

Qualifications
* BDS or MBBS or equivalent qualification
* Full GMC or GDC registration
* Clear desire to work as a Resident (Trust) Doctor
* If MBBS, BDS desirable; MRCS desirable
* If BDS, MFDS Part 1 desirable
Teaching / Research / Audit
* Willingness to engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
* Desire to utilise local medical education resources
* Understanding of audit principles and values
