Job Overview

Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Acute Care Inpatient Psychiatry

There are 2 wards for adults in Ablett Unit, with 10 beds for females (Dinas Female) and 10 beds for male inpatients (Dinas Male) as well as the s136 suite. The Home Treatment Team is also based in the Ablett Unit. The unit also hosts an 8 bedded male locked rehabilitation ward (Cynnydd) and a 10 bedded Older Persons’ functional ward (Tegid Ward). The adult acute care service covers the 20 bedded adult ward and the Home Treatment Team (HTT). The HTT has the capacity to take on approximately 25 patients at any one time. Crises Resolution Services are provided within the local community mental health services and do not form part of this acute care model. The acute care teams work collaboratively with CMHTs to ensure timely communication and care planning.

The care of individuals is subject to the Mental Health Measure (Wales) 2010 and the post holder is expected to work in line with the requirements of the MH Measure. The post holder will provide patient‑centred recovery based care through a supervisory and consultancy role and provide Responsible Clinician oversight for approximately half of the adult acute care service covering 10 beds and half the HTT patients alongside the other Substantive Approved Clinician.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be the treating consultant alongside the other Approved Clinician for inpatients admitted to Dinas Male and Female wards and those accepted for Home Treatment Team. The post holder will also act as the responsible clinician for patients admitted under the Mental Health Act, provide medical leadership to the multidisciplinary team, work closely with the sector consultant, CMHT and local authorities to provide continuity of care and robust discharge planning, and be the supervising doctor for junior doctors attached to the post.
