Position Summary
JMT’s Richmond, VA office is seeking a Water Resources Design Engineer to support the planning, analysis, and design of stormwater and drainage systems for transportation, land development, and municipal infrastructure projects. This role involves performing hydraulic and hydrologic analyses, preparing design calculations and plans, and assisting in the development of construction documents under the supervision of senior engineering staff.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
* Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and computations for transportation projects and Water Resources specific projects/tasks to include development/design of open channels/ditches, storm sewer system, culverts, stormwater management facilities, erosion and sediment control plans, and watershed studies and models.
* Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography and other topographical or geological data to plan projects.
* Prepare drainage calculations, exhibits, and technical reports/memoranda.
* Develop and modify design plans, profiles, details, and quantities using CAD software.
* Support preparation of construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
* Review project‑specific standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
* Assist with coordination between drainage, roadway, and other civil design disciplines.
* Participate in quality control reviews and resolve comments under guidance.
* Support permitting documentation and responses for local, state, and federal agencies.
* Attend project meetings and assist with field reviews as needed.
* Assist in developing construction cost estimates.
* Assist in the preparation of engineering documents for advertisement and construction.
* Coordinate with internal team members to ensure project completion by the defined deadline and established quality.
Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities
* Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Experience
* Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited engineering program.
* 2-5 years of related experience.
* Proficient in discipline‑specific design software.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office.
* Strong written and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
* Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
* Related experience/internships.
* Experience in discipline‑specific software, i.e. Bentley OpenRoads Designer (ORD), HY‑8, HydroCAD, HEC‑RAS, PCSWMM, etc.
Working Conditions
Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
