About the Role

The Oxford Applied and Theoretical Machine Learning group at the Department of Computer Science is looking for an energetic and entrepreneurial Programme Manager to help run the group in a dynamic role involving thought partnership on group strategy and direction and day‑to‑day operationalising of that vision, working together with Professor Yarin Gal.

The Programme Manager will be responsible for the operations of the research group, act as a force multiplier on the group’s impact, promote and build its global reputation, and oversee the day‑to‑day management of the group’s Project Support Officer. The role offers an exciting opportunity to support and collaboratively work with a fast‑paced, world‑leading research group, motivated to help find solutions so the group runs efficiently and effectively. You will translate the vision of the group into an operational plan and execute it, coordinating with multiple stakeholders across industry and academia to organise and manage the group’s project portfolio composed of many projects (£>3m).

About the Research Group

Machine learning (ML), or “AI” as it is referred to by the media, has been the driving force behind the most exciting recent technological advances, impacting fields such as medical imaging, conversational agents, astronomy, and many more. The Oxford Applied and Theoretical Machine Learning (OATML) group is an energetic, world‑leading research group working at the core of machine learning research and its applications, located at the Computer Science department and led by Yarin Gal.

We are a multidisciplinary team of researchers (postdocs, research associates and DPhil students) from diverse backgrounds including Computer Science, Maths & Stats, Engineering, Physics, Medicine, and industry. OATML has 20+ researchers and associates focused on concurrent projects across domains such as medical, climate, ML security and technical AI safety, foundation models, autonomous driving, astronomy, computational biology, physics, and fundamental ML. We collaborate with world‑class ML labs e.g. Google, DeepMind, Apple, GSK, Toyota, JPMorgan, and Intel, as well as Harvard Medical School, Berkeley AI lab, Montréal’s MILA, among others.

About You

The ideal candidate will expertly coordinate between various departments and teams, write grant proposals, develop project and donor reports, assist in research dissemination by refining the group’s communication, outreach, and collaboration strategies. The candidate will coordinate with the media, developing materials (e.g. for website, newsletter, talks, presentations) and help coordinate the group’s outreach efforts. The programme manager will lead and drive the group’s HR, finance, and health and safety related processes, and coordinate with relevant stakeholders as required.

The successful candidate will be expected to work onsite in Oxford, ensure that the relevant administrative duties are carried out (in partnership with the group’s Project Support Officer) and that appropriate management and support is available for each of the partners, to support the delivery of the project, designating funds where needed to achieve this aim.

These tasks will support research focused on AI model safety, security, reliability and robustness, as well as foundational research on frontier models, covering topics such as uncertainty quantification and reliable decision‑making, multi‑agent systems, reasoning, neural network quantisation, on‑device machine learning, and benchmark development.
