Marketing Assistant (Zero-Hours Contract)

North Bear Media Ltd | Belper, Derbyshire (Fully Remote)

Contract type: Zero-hours, PAYE

Pay: £14 per hour

About Us

North Bear Media is a small but growing digital marketing business based in Belper, Derbyshire. We work as a part-time marketing department for a handful of small and medium-sized businesses across the East Midlands, handling their social media, advertising, content, and website work so they can focus on running their business.

We are not an agency. We build long-term, honest relationships with our clients and become a trusted part of their team. We currently work with clients in sectors including motor trade, property, accountancy, and hospitality.

The business is growing steadily. Our client base and workload have been increasing month on month, and we have reached the point where we need someone reliable to help with delivery so we can continue that trajectory. In other words, there is more work than one person can do in their pyjamas, and that is a good problem to have.

The Role

This is a zero-hours, fully remote role. You will work from home using your own equipment. There are no guaranteed minimum hours, but to set expectations honestly, the starting point is likely to be around 5 to 10 hours per week.

If we continue on our current growth path, those hours will increase over time and we would love the right person to grow with us should they wish to. This is a genuine opportunity to get in early with a business that is building something.

We are potentially looking to bring on more than one person, each with different strengths. So if your skills lean more toward video editing, photo editing, social media management, AI tools, or something else entirely rather than graphic design, we still want to hear from you. Tell us what you are good at and how you think it could help a growing marketing business.

You will report directly to the director. All client contact stays with us. You will never be thrown in front of a client or left to figure things out alone. Your job is to produce good work to a clear brief, on time. Everything is reviewed and signed off before it goes anywhere.

This role suits someone who is building their own freelance career, studying, or looking for flexible work that fits around other commitments. If you want something steady and predictable with set hours every week, this is probably not for you.

What You Will Be Doing

Day to day, this will include a mix of (none of it involves making tea, we promise):

• Creating social media graphics and posts using Canva

• Writing short-form copy for social media, ads, and basic web content

• Building and managing simple ad campaigns in Meta Ads Manager

• Scheduling content using social media management tools

• Resizing and adapting designs across different formats and platforms

• Light admin tasks such as pulling reports or updating content calendars

What We Are Looking For

• Confident using Canva (or similar design tools) to create clean, on-brand graphics

• Comfortable writing clear, engaging copy without needing heavy direction

• Familiar with Meta Business Suite and Facebook/Instagram ad basics

• Organised and reliable, able to work independently and hit deadlines

• Happy working on a flexible, zero-hours basis with variable workload

• Has their own laptop and a reliable internet connection

Nice to Have (Not Essential)

• Video editing skills (Premiere Pro, CapCut, DaVinci Resolve, or similar)

• Photo editing experience (Photoshop, Lightroom, or similar)

• Experience with AI tools for content creation or workflow automation

• Experience with Google Ads or other PPC platforms

• Basic understanding of WordPress or website content management

• Knowledge of Mailchimp or similar email marketing tools

• Based in Derbyshire or the East Midlands

How to Apply

Apply with your CV and a short message explaining why this kind of flexible role suits you and where you are at in your career.

As part of your application, please complete the following short task:

Design a single Instagram post for the following fictional business:

Business name: Dave's Magic Carpet Repairs

Location: Matlock, Derbyshire

What they do: Family-run flying carpet repair and restoration. Specialising in threadbare enchantments, altitude loss, and dodgy tassels since 1987.

The post should promote: Their new spring MOT service for flying carpets. 20% off through April.

Brand colours: Deep purple and gold

Tone: Friendly, a bit cheeky, local feel

Use Canva or any design tool you prefer. Submit as a PNG or PDF alongside your application.

This is a made-up business, so there is nothing to copy. We want to see how you interpret a brief, how your design looks, and whether you can write a decent bit of copy. It should take about 15 to 20 minutes.

Important: Your submission must be your own work. Do not use AI to generate the design or the copy. We will know, and your application will not be considered.

If your strengths lie outside of graphic design (for example video editing, photo editing, or AI implementation), feel free to submit something that better showcases what you do. Just explain in your application what you have sent and why.

Applications without a task submission will not be considered.

What Happens Next

Applications close at midnight on Tuesday 31st March 2026.

Every applicant will hear back from us by Monday 6th April, whether successful or not. No ghosting here, we are better than that. If you are shortlisted, we will send you a short second-stage task on the same day. It is not War and Peace, but it will ask you to think. We will need it back by Wednesday 8th April.

Interviews will take place via Teams during the week commencing Monday 13th April, with a final decision by Friday 17th April. If all goes well, we would be looking to get started from the week commencing 20th April.

That said, we are not going to make the right person wait around for the sake of a tidy process. If a strong application comes in early, we may send the second-stage task straight away, arrange a Teams call the same week, and have you started shortly after. So if you are keen, do not wait until the deadline.

If you have read this far and you are still interested, you are probably exactly the kind of person we are looking for. We look forward to hearing from you.
