Come and join a well-established friendly team, working within a modern, well equipped, fully UKAS 15189 accredited regional immunology laboratory. Staff will be appointed to the band 3 pay scale, dependent on the criteria listed in the person specification.

This post will be appointed to Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, however candidates should be aware that Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is part of a pathology collaboration project. Four provider organisations in Lancashire and south Cumbria have committed to form a network and collaborate on pathology services, including Blackpool Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. The intention is to form one pathology entity which will be is hosted by one of the existing provider organisations.

Main duties of the job

We are well equipped to provide an efficient high quality regional diagnostic service. Our equipment comprises of a Navios flow cytometer, DSII ELISA processors, Capillarys 2 Flex, Hydrasys 2 scan, Euroblot One, Bioplex, Helios slide processors, Phadia 2500, Phadia 1000, 2 x Phadia 250's and a BNII .

Staff rotate within the immunology department throughout three sections; autoimmunity, flow cytometry and immunochemistry and allergy using the latest automation and learning highly skilled manual specialist skills. You will be expected to run and maintain analysers and instruments, perform manual assays, file and retrieve patient samples, unpack and store orders, send post specimens away to referral laboratories and perform general laboratory housekeeping duties.

The post is full time 37.5 hours per week.

You will be a member of a team of medical laboratory assistants providing support to biomedical scientists and to the wider immunology team at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

You will demonstrate excellent organisational skills, must be flexible in approach, able to exercise initiative and demonstrate a consistently high standards of professionalism, being aware of the need for confidentiality and integrity.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties to include but not be limited to:

1. Providing support, housekeeping and stock control for immunology
2. Performing work duties to the standards required in the job description and person specification
3. Undertaking the correct procedures for the handling of specimens, pre and post analysis
4. Maintaining and operating equipment used in the preparation and analysis of specimens
5. Performing a range of laboratory tests
6. Demonstrating awareness of factors affecting sample integrity and risks associated with the sample reagents or method
7. Using the main laboratory computer system in accordance with service requirements

Qualifications

Essential criteria

8. NVQ level 3 or equivalent experience
9. Uses continuing professional development as a means of self- development

Knowledge

Essential criteria

10. Have working knowledge of immunology laboratory areas including both practical and theoretical knowledge of various methods employed
11. Aware of the concept and application of confidentiality
12. Understanding of health and safety legislation pertaining to clinical laboratories
13. Able to demonstrate continuing competence in good laboratory general practice

Desirable criteria

14. Understanding of laboratory quality issues
15. Familiar with pathology LIMS
16. Experience of working in a clinical pathology laboratory
17. Knowledge of common IT programmes such as Word and Excel
