This role is envisaged as an equal split between Antimicrobial Stewardship and HIV, but there is flexibility depending on candidates’ knowledge and experience.
Candidates who meet the qualifications for this post but may not yet demonstrate the full knowledge or experience required at Band 8a will still be considered for this role as a Band 7 to Band 8a progression opportunity. The successful candidate will receive the necessary support to achieve the required progression milestones and demonstrate the expected level of practice before progressing to an advanced specialist Band 8a role.
Responsibilities include:
1. Providing a high-quality, patient-focused clinical pharmacy service.
2. Promoting the safe, rational, and effective use of antimicrobials across the trust.
3. Leading and providing an advanced clinical pharmacy service to the HIV team.
4. Establishing clearly defined roles for pharmacist non-medical prescribers within HIV and antimicrobials.
5. Developing pharmacy services to ensure efficient resource use, including monitoring drug expenditure, delivering financial savings, and enabling early discharge.
6. Collaborating with pharmacy, microbiology/infection control, medical, and nursing staff on programmes identified by the antimicrobial steering group.
7. Developing a framework for safe, cost-effective, and rational prescribing for patients with HIV.
8. Working with the antimicrobial steering group, clinical, and governance teams to develop guidelines, protocols, and PGDs for antimicrobials & HIV/Sexual Health.
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff and those with recent relevant experience, including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon, as per the Person Specification.

This role involves working as an integral member of both microbiology and Sexual Health & HIV multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with clinicians, nurse specialists, and other healthcare professionals to provide dedicated services to sexual health & HIV patients. The role also involves working closely with various clinical specialties as an infection management expert, promoting antimicrobial stewardship, and educating colleagues on antimicrobial use.
