About the Role

Grain LNG (GLNG) is Europe's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal and the UK's leading gateway for global LNG, located on the Isle of Grain in Kent. The facility provides critical energy security for the UK, with the capacity to meet at least 25% of the UK's gas demand, offering storage, regasification, and reloading services.

The GLNG facility operates state of the art assets, managed via world class processes and procedures to ensure industry leading Asset Management practises. As a top tier Control of Major Accident Hazard (COMAH) site, a continuous program of capital expenditure (CAPEX) investment needs to be delivered to ensure the ongoing safety, reliability, availability and efficiency of the plant.

Grain LNG is looking for an Occupational Safety Lead to help us maintain and strengthen high standards of health and safety performance across the terminal.

This is a high visibility, field facing role: you’ll spend time out in the operational areas, engaging with teams and contractors, providing practical support and guidance, and helping to embed safe behaviours every day. The role focuses on coaching, influencing and supporting people on site to consistently demonstrate safe behaviours, comply with health and safety requirements, and manage risk effectively in a high hazard LNG environment. The role is equally suited to experienced HSE professionals or operational leaders who have demonstrated strong ownership of safety compliance in complex industrial settings. Your responsibilities will include managing the implementation of site safety management systems.

You will also oversee contracts with third-party providers to ensure that all site safety equipment is properly always maintained and fully operational.

The role is based on site at Grain LNG in Rochester so you will need to be able to drive with a full UK driving licence to travel to site for the role.

What you’ll do

As Occupational Safety Lead, you’ll take a leading role in delivering our front line safety programme, ensuring site activities comply with UK health and safety legislation and requirements (outside of COMAH) as set out in our site legal register. You’ll provide clear, practical advice to colleagues across the terminal, helping people understand and apply safety requirements in real work situation.

* Oversee site compliance to all relevant Health and Safety legislation and regulation outside of the COMAH regulations that are identified in the site legal register. This includes but is not limited to PuWER / LoLER / CoSHH / Asbestos etc.
* Act as a visible, trusted safety presence in the field, routinely engaging with frontline personnel through site walks, task observations, toolbox talks and informal coaching conversations.
* Coach and support supervisors and technicians to understand not just what the rules are, but why they matter, enabling good decisions at the point of work.
* Intervene constructively when unsafe acts or conditions are observed, using coaching techniques rather than enforcement wherever possible.
* Support operational teams to consistently demonstrate compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, enabling practical application of PUWER, LOLER, COSHH and related regulations at the workface.
* Supervise and lead Occupational Safety compliance team
* Working directly with the Occupational Technical Authority, providing feedback on the site safety management system.
* Ensure site safety system maintenance contracts are carried out satisfactorily, maintaining availability and operability of these systems including but not limited to fixed fire assets and fire extinguishers
* Own non-live site fire risk assessment complying with Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order
* Act as the site responsible person for the management of asbestos including maintenance of the site asbestos register.
* Lead site safety communication programme to ensure sharing of best practice
* Support implementation of site behavioural safety programme "Keeping It Safe Today & Tomorrow" KISTT
* Encourage engagement in all site safety related meetings and recording systems such as the site incident management system (IMS).
* Collate data from the IMS system providing analysis and insight and report via relevant KPIs and senior stakeholder communication channels such as weekly and monthly management and board meetings

What you’ll need

* Strong working knowledge of UK health & safety legislation and how it applies in operational settings (including the Health and Safety at Work Act and relevant regulations such as PUWER/LOLER/COSHH).
* Experience overseeing or implementing health & safety management systems (ISO 4501 knowledge is relevant).
* Experience working in a high hazard environment; LNG/hydrocarbons knowledge and understanding of the process safety context is beneficial.
* Effective management and control of on-the-job expenditure and of allocated budgets
* Good Project Management skills including management of site safety initiatives and improvements to site safety systems.
* People skills
* Team and subject leadership
* A confident communicator with proven ability to build rapport and credibility who can engage a wide range of stakeholders and ensure information is understood.
* Strong stakeholder management and the ability to organise and plan work effectively.
* Interest in, and experience with, behavioural safety approaches-supporting positive safety conversations and culture (our site behavioural safety programme is KISTT - "Keeping it Safe Today & Tomorrow"), with experience using coaching, questioning and influencing techniques to improve safety behaviours
* Comfortable challenging unsafe behaviours respectfully, even in high‑pressure operational environments
* Formal H&S qualification (e.g. NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent) or demonstrable experience delivering or overseeing occupational safety compliance in a high‑hazard environment

What you’ll get

A competitive salary between £60,000 - £70,000 per annum dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as salary sacrifice car and technology schemes.

We value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive workplace for all. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates - we make appointments purely on merit, assessed against objective selection criteria. We support flexible working and will make reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process should you have any physical or mental impairment which may affect your ability to participate in the process.

Please note that in most cases, Grain LNG is unable to offer sponsorship for employment under the UK points‑based immigration system. As such, applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK without requiring sponsorship now or in the future under the UK points‑based immigration system. However, in exceptional circumstances where there is a clear and demonstrable need for specialist skills that cannot be sourced from the local labour market, Grain LNG may consider offering sponsorship. All applications are welcome from candidates who meet these requirements, regardless of race, nationality, or ethnic origin.
