Job Description
Job Purpose
The Welfare Officer will ensure that students in university residences have access to advice, guidance, and support, liaising with or escalating to specialist services as needed. You will meet students daily, signpost them, and connect them with campus support teams such as Safeguarding, Security, Student Support Officers, Counselling, Disability Services, Financial Aid, and the SRC Advice Centre.
The Welfare Officer will promote healthy lifestyles, self-care, and assist students in navigating various challenges. The role involves working on a rotating schedule, including weekday and weekend shifts (standard hours 3pm to 11pm), with on-call duties overnight approximately once every five weeks, requiring flexibility.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Respond to out-of-hours welfare requests and escalate as necessary.
* Provide guidance and support to colleagues in Warden, Security, and Accommodation teams.
* Build partnerships with university services, SRC, and the community to support student wellbeing.
* Collaborate with Safeguarding and Security to manage risks.
* Facilitate conflict resolution among students.
* Deliver educational responses to behavioural issues as part of the ResLife Strategy.
* Engage with diverse student groups to identify needs and share insights.
* Communicate effectively with the Residence Life team during shifts.
* Coordinate with Residence Assistants and other teams to support welfare initiatives.
* Maintain collaborative relationships with both university-managed and private residences.
Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential:
A1. Demonstrated competencies for this role, acquired through personal development or similar experience.
A2. Knowledge of safeguarding, mental health, sexual violence, harassment, misconduct, and hate crime.
A3. Familiarity with Glasgow’s cultural, social, educational landscape, and emergency services.
A4. Basic understanding of crisis management, risk assessment, and working with support services.
Desirable:
B1. Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies on student welfare, safeguarding, and equality.
B2. Professional membership in disciplines such as Social Work, Mental Health Nursing, Counselling, Psychology, or DBT.
Skills
C1. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
C2. Strong organizational skills.
C3. Experience providing advice and support to students or young people.
C4. Good written/verbal communication, report writing, and training skills.
C5. Attention to confidentiality and GDPR compliance.

Terms and Conditions
Salary: Grade 6, £33,482 - £37,174 per annum.
