Job Overview
Position: Software Developer with AI in Modern Construction – KTP Associate. Department: School of Physics, Engineering & Computer Science (SPECS). Full-time equivalent: 1 fte, 37.5 hours per week.
Contract: Fixed‑term 35 months. Salary: KTP between £38,000 pa and £50,000 pa, dependent on skills and experience. Annual leave: 24 days plus public holidays; 3–5 days required to cover office closure between Christmas and New Year.
Location: University of Hertfordshire, College Lane, Hatfield, AL10 9AB and Ultrapanel Building Technology Ltd., Enterprise Works, Salthill Road, Clitheroe, BB7 1PE.
About the Programme
This role is part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) funded by Innovate UK, a 3‑way collaboration between graduates, a business (Ultrapanel) and a university or research institution. As a KTP Associate you will lead the project with support from company and academic supervisors and benefit from coaching and mentoring by Innovate UK advisers.
About Ultrapanel
Ultrapanel, a subsidiary of the Ultraframe Group, commercialises its Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) system for the new‑build housing market. Since 2021 the company has generated £1.7 m through design, manufacture and installation of room‑in‑roof structures. In 2024 its technology was accredited for external wall applications and is expected to drive additional revenue from 2026. Ultrapanel employs eight staff and works with six seconded Design Engineers from Ultraframe’s R&D team.
Responsibilities
* Lead the design and delivery of a digital solution to enhance manufacturing and assembly processes, improving productivity, resource use, material waste reduction, and standardisation across building types.
* Collect and analyse data, contribute to the design and organisation of the project and collaborate with academic team members on peer‑reviewed papers and presentations.
* Disseminate project results and outputs, ensuring high‑standard collating and writing of the final project.
* Participate in academic life of the school through seminars and other events.
Skills & Experience Required
Technical experience in software development and AI; knowledge of business functions is preferable. Experience leading or being highly involved in a project through placement or employment is ideal. Understanding of data engineering, integration and API is expected. The candidate should be methodical, detail‑oriented, able to work to deadlines as part of a team and independently.
Qualifications
Minimum: Undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a closely related subject or relevant discipline, or higher.
Work Hours
8:00 am–4:00 pm with a 30‑minute lunch break; some flexibility regarding working times is possible.
