Ward 2B is a 27-bedded acute Neurosurgical ward receiving both elective and urgent patients who require our high standards of care following head and spinal traumas and multiple conditions which require Neurosurgical interventions and surgery. We have a new 10-bedded short stay area which we are currently developing for patients who require investigations and elective surgery.
This is a fixed term contract of 12 months to cover maternity leave. Newly qualified and experienced nurses should apply to join our fabulous team. You will be supported to complete the preceptorship programme and competencies to enable you to fulfil your new role on ward 2B.
Main duties of the job
The main role of the Staff nurse is to care for a case load of pre and post operative patients effectively and safely under the guidance of the nurse in charge of the shift.
You will gain competence in performing Neurological observations, basic nursing care, electronic risk assessment and care plan completion using Flex and administering medications including using PICC lines once competencies have been achieved.
You will be expected to recognise a deteriorating patient and perform an A-E assessment and escalate their care appropriately.
You will asses, plan, deliver and evaluate care on an individual patient basis and reassess if needed.
You will work very closely with the MDT enabling us to streamline the patient journey and work towards safe and effective discharge planning.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
1. Appropriate NMC Registration
2. RN8 or RNC Children’s Nursing Posts
3. Diploma in nursing
4. NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
5. Evidence of continuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 nurses
Desirable criteria
6. Degree
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
7. Willing to expand clinical role e.g. IV additives, venepuncture and cannulation
8. Awareness of changes within nursing practice
9. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
10. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
11. Demonstrates competency during internship
Desirable criteria
12. Knowledge of ethical issues
13. Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality e.g. surgery
