Advert: Clinical Tutor
The School of Optometry and Vision Sciences are looking to appoint a number of Clinical Tutors in all aspects of clinical teaching and are able to offer working arrangements to suit you, including part and full days. Applications are invited for supervisors of a variety of undergraduate clinics, including Primary Care, Contact Lenses, Binocular Vision, Low Vision, Dispensing and Special Assessment.
Under the guidance of mentors within the School, the role is varied and includes teaching in small groups, 1:1 support, advancing students’ clinical competencies, informal pastoral support to final year students, and contributing to the School’s undergraduate teaching programme. You will be part of a team of supervisors with diverse areas of expertise and interests.
You will become an integral and vital part of the Undergraduate teaching programme and contribute to the School’s record of graduate quality.
Salary: Clinic Tutor hourly rate is £27.78 - £29.48 per hour. This rate is based on Grade 5 hourly rate of £18.3473 to £19.7983 (£33,482 - £36,130 pro rata per annum) plus 21% pay in lieu of annual leave plus market supplement.

Job Description: The successful candidate will deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate level and contribute to the teaching record of the School through commitment to current teaching activities, leading to the advancement of student clinical competency. The successful candidate will carry out duties with a mentor.
Main Duties
* Undertake teaching at undergraduate level, delivering supervision and informal tutorials in Primary Care and Contact Lens clinics, Binocular Vision, Low Vision, Dispensing and Special Assessment.
* With guidance, supervise students through providing first-line support, pastoral care, student assessments and teaching feedback, including assisting setting and marking of assignments, giving written/oral feedback and collating final assessments.
* Participate as a teaching team member, supporting colleagues, contributing to module design, assessment procedures, accreditation of courses and quality control; identify learning needs and define objectives.
* Supervise students undertaking clinical work with individual feedback.
* Take professional responsibility for patient care, including further investigation and appropriate management and referral where necessary.
* Deliver tutorials and group work, prepare teaching material, encourage critical discourse, observe and respond to student interventions, and handle contingencies in course delivery.
* Carry out administrative duties such as class records, meetings and report writing.
* Conduct course evaluation, facilitate student feedback, reflect on teaching design and delivery, and use feedback to improve performance.
* Contribute to collaborative decision-making on academic content, module reviews and assessment of student work.

* Attend and participate in School committees and represent the School when required.
* Undergo personal and professional reviews to develop performance.
* Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria
* Evidence of expertise in Optometry, Contact Lenses or Dispensing with ongoing specialist development.
* Experience of providing training or instruction in an optometric environment to practice staff or pre-registration optometrists.
* Ability to plan and prioritise own daily work and forward plan for teaching.
Qualifications
* An honours degree in Optometry, or equivalent experience/related subject. Current GOC registration. If in patient-facing clinics, maintain CPD and NHS registration as required. The School will consider applicants who are a Dispensing Optician or Contact Lens Optician with relevant experience.
* GOC registration and relevant optometric practice experience. If practicing in patient-facing clinics with NHS patients, register with a relevant NHS Health Board.
* Recent/current experience in an optometric clinical environment. If applying as Optometrist, EHEW accreditation or agreement to undergo accreditation upon commencement.
Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
* Demonstrably pro-active, adaptable, with excellent teamwork and communication skills and a willingness to contribute positively to teaching.
* Ability to present complex information clearly to others using a range of media.
Desirable Criteria
* Welsh-language proficiency.
