The Engineering and Mathematics subject group at Edinburgh Napier University has a strong expertise in energy, materials & manufacturing, mechanical & design, mathematics & modelling, automation & robotics, and operations & production management.
Our students focus on engineering practices, computing skills and principles of design relating to a wide range of mechanical and energy systems, which requires the right level of practical support with use of a number of workshop machines such as lathes, milling, drilling and CNC machines.
As such, we are currently employing an Engineering Workshop Technician to take on this function and deliver a high-quality technical service to support the undergraduate and postgraduate Engineering degree courses.
The Role:
As Engineering Workshop Technician, you will have the opportunity to use your extensive knowledge of workshop machinery to support undergraduates with practical sessions, support student projects (which is an essential part of their degree), and generally help to keep workshop users safe in a high-risk working area.
We anticipate that you will have plenty of experience of operating workshop machine tools such as lathes, milling and drilling machines, as well as using CAD/CAM for design and fabrication of a wide variety of parts and products, leaving you in a great position to pass on expert knowledge to students, while also providing consultation to researchers working on innovative projects requiring bespoke parts or general manufacturing guidance.
Your excellent communication skills will also come in handy, as you deliver basic workshop skills classes to student groups to train them on the use of hand tools, for example power drills, jigsaws etc.
Further to this your safety conscious approach will be hugely important, as you pass on this attitude to students, ensuring that H&S legislation pertaining to heavy machinery and power tools is adhered to in the machine workshop at all times, and that every student is trained and educated in the safe handling and operation of relevant tools.
This is an excellent opportunity to use your skills and experience in an environment that offers good work-life balance, fantastic benefits and the chance to pass on your knowledge and good practice to the next generation while potentially contributing to the next new innovative design or manufacturing method that could change the way the industry operates.
If you have the relevant skills and experience and the motivation to make a real difference, then we would love to hear from you.
What we will need from you:
- Educated to N/SVQ level 3 or equivalent City and Guilds in relevant subjects plus minimum of 3 to 4 years relevant work experience (post apprenticeship) in an engineering workshop or manufacturing environment.
- General engineering experience including product development and manufacturing technical skills.
- Experience of operating workshop machine tools such as lathes, milling and drilling machines etc
- Experience of operating and programming CNC machines. (FANUC or Mazatrol)
- Experience of Computer Aided Design/Manufacture (CAD/CAM) and ability to advise and guide students in the modification of engineering drawing designs.
- Knowledge of H&S legislation pertaining to heavy machinery and power tools and the ability to educate and train students in their safe use.
