Where you'll be working

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Mental Health Clinician to join our supportive and dynamic team at the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), based at Armidale Community Health Service. CAMHS is a specialist mental health service that provides assessment and treatment for young people aged 0–17 years, along with their families and carers, living within the Hunter New England Local Health District (LHD). The service supports young people experiencing complex and severe mental health difficulties that significantly affect their daily functioning and development. While the position is based in Armidale, some travel within the region may occasionally be required during work hours.


What you'll be doing

As a Mental Health Clinician within the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), you will deliver high-quality assessment, treatment, and case coordination services to children, young people, and their families or caregivers. You will contribute discipline-specific expertise within a supportive multidisciplinary team that includes Psychiatry, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, Nursing, and Dietetics.

In Hunter New England CAMHS, we provide specialist child, adolescent, and family-based mental health assessments and interventions. Our model of care supports individual, dyadic, and family therapy, ensuring comprehensive and developmentally appropriate support for young people experiencing complex mental health challenges.

You will work collaboratively within the team and the broader CAMHS network, supported by supervision, training, and partnerships that foster professional growth and effective service delivery.

This position is well suited to Clinical Psychologists in Training who are completing their Masters and seeking a placement in NSW Health. Options for full time employment may be available in the future to support a registrar program post-graduation. If seeking a placement, please nominate your placement coordinator as one of your referees.


The role of a Mental Health Clinician at CAMHS includes:

* Working within a multidisciplinary team to provide specialist, person-centred clinical interventions to children, young people, and their families or carers.
* Delivering trauma-informed care tailored to the needs of young people and families affected by mental health concerns.
* Exercising independent professional judgement and clinical decision-making.
* Ensuring all care aligns with professional, legal, ethical, and organisational standards while maintaining evidence-based, family- and culturally sensitive practice.
* Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement in clinical practice and contributing to service development initiatives.
* Working semi-autonomously on assessment, formulation, and clinical documentation tasks.


About you

You are an experienced and compassionate Mental Health Clinician with a strong commitment to improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health outcomes of children, adolescents, and their families. You thrive in a multidisciplinary team environment and value collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.

As part of our supportive team, you’ll receive direct line management and guidance from the CAMHS New England North West Team Leader, as well as mentoring from experienced Psychologists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, and Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists. You’ll also have access to regular clinical supervision, professional development opportunities, and ongoing education to support your growth and success in the role.


You will demonstrate:

* A client-centred approach that recognises the importance of family and cultural context.
* Sound clinical skills in assessment, formulation, and evidence-based therapeutic intervention.
* The ability to manage complex presentations and exercise professional autonomy.
* Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
* A passion for trauma-informed and recovery-oriented care.


Requirements

* Must hold a qualification in one of the following: Occupational Therapy, Clin Psychology/clin psych in training, Nursing, Social Work, Counsellor (Degree in Bachelor of Health Science Mental health, Djirruwang Program), Nutrition and Dietetics which provides eligibility or membership of the relevant professional association general registration through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency or relevant post-registration qualifications and at least 3 years' experience working in the clinical area of their specified post-graduate qualification, or such other qualifications or equivalent experience deemed appropriate by the service.
* Eligibility to drive in NSW and interstate and the willingness to travel in the course of employment.
