Role Description
Title: Atlassian/Confluence Engineer/ Specialist
Location: Edinburgh or Manchester (Hybrid working)
Contract: 6 months
Design, implement, and scale Confluence as the single source of truth for product-centric delivery across engineering. You’ll integrate with Jira and GitHub, automate documentation flows, set standards and governance, and enable teams to move from project to product with measurable improvements in flow, quality, and reusability.
Key Outcomes
1. Confluence adopted by ≥90% of engineering squads with product-centric space structures and standard templates.
2. Automated connections: Jira issue/roadmap sync to Confluence, GitHub PR/README surfacing, build/runbooks from pipelines.
3. Engineering knowledge base searchable and governed (labels, ownership, review cadences).
4. Time-to-find critical knowledge reduced by 40%+; stale content <10%.
5. Audit-ready controls (retention, permissions, PII/confidential tagging) aligned with InfoSec/Compliance.
Responsibilities
6. Own Confluence platform engineering (Cloud or DC), including SSO (Entra ID/Azure AD), groups/permissions, spaces, templates, blueprints, macros, and lifecycle automation.
7. Integrate Confluence with Jira Software, GitHub Enterprise, and Azure services (DevOps, AKS, Key Vault, Monitor).
8. Define engineering documentation standards (ADR, runbooks, architecture, onboarding, incident reviews).
9. Build space hierarchies for product lines, platforms, and enabling functions.
10. Implement automation: smart links, Jira automation, GitHub webhooks/actions updates, status pages, change/backlog snapshots.
11. Establish governance (labels, information classification, content ownership, review SLAs, archiving).
12. Migrate or federate content from SharePoint/legacy systems where needed.
13. Train champions, run clinics, write how-to’s, and measure adoption/KPIs.
Required Skills
14. 5+ years Atlassian administration with deep Confluence experience (Cloud or DC), strong Jira Software integration.
15. Automation expertise: Jira Automation, Confluence templates/blueprints, ScriptRunner (or equivalent), webhooks, and API scripting (Python/PowerShell).
16. GitHub Enterprise integration (PR links, repo README surfacing, code search links, actions status).
17. Strong grasp of product operating models (squads/tribes, roadmaps, OKRs, tech debt).
18. Microsoft stack familiarity: C#, .NET, Java, Python, Azure (AKS, Monitor, DevOps), Entra ID SSO.
19. Information architecture, taxonomy/metadata, and content lifecycle governance.
20. Security/compliance: least-privilege, auditability, retention, sensitive data handling.
Desirable
21. experience in financial services or regulated enterprise.
22. Knowledge of Backstage/Developer Portals and how Confluence complements.
23. Familiarity with incident/problem/postmortem practices (SRE-lite).
