Team Leader (Fabrication/Welding)
Location - Gloucestershire
Our client specialises in the design, build and installation of bespoke factory automation systems comprising special purpose machinery, conveyors, control systems, vision inspection, and robotics. This role is within the Fabrications unit of the business, responsible for the internal supply of bespoke metal fabricated components and parts.
The role
Our client has recently invested heavily in their machine shop and metal fabrication unit which includes 3 CNC’s, lathe, 3.2m x 125T press brake, 3kW fiber laser and MIG & TIG welding bays. Reporting to the Production Manager, you’ll join as team leader to a small team of colleagues, charged with running and manufacturing the production of bespoke machine parts. You don’t need to be highly skilled in all areas but must have a thorough understanding of what’s involved but operating and running a brake press is key as you’ll be taking the lead there. The more open you are to upskilling, and having a flexible, positive outlook, the more interested we are in you. You’ll be responsible for the day to day safe and efficient running of the fabrications business unit, as well as the team, scheduling and output quality. This is an integral role requiring good planning and time management skills to ensure that complex fabricated parts are delivered to the highest possible standards and in a timely fashion.
Key responsibilities include
Being the key person for safe, yet efficient running of a brake press
Managing the flow of production and ensuring production stays on track
Ensuring machinery is effectively maintained and/or serviced (TPM)
Leading/supervising and effectively delegating to team members – getting the best out of the team and utilising their skillsets to best effect. Creating the right balance between hard work and enjoyment in the workplace
Managing and maintaining a clean, safe machine shop and facilities. Ensuring any repairs are flagged for remedy and carried out in a timely fashion
Setting the highest possible standards – quality and efficiency- and instilling them in the team
Ensure team members and any site visitors conform with the company’s health and safety standards, without exception
Motivating team to take pride in their work areas and tools
HR effectiveness – managing attendance, sickness records and ensuring effective management of staff holidays so that business is not impacted but equally staff welfare is not impacted
Ensuring you and your team consistently and accurately log projects with timesheet reporting
Identifying personnel issues and responding/managing appropriately – not letting things slide – proactively flagging upwards and seeking HR guidance as required
Interpreting technical drawings/documents
Working closely with design and production times – maintaining strong communications and setting expectations
Advising on the right processes and using your experience to recommend the best suppliers
Ordering raw materials and site consumables in accordance with purchasing systems and budgets
Knowing when to escalate and setting realistic delivery expectations
Role Requirements
Have sound experience of fabrication shop environments and processes
Have strong experience of leading teams, dealing with different characters in order to get the best out of people
Be IT literate – a competent computer user as you’ll need to manage production and resource schedules
Have an understanding of Lean processes and 5S
Be experienced user of brake press
Lead by example, and instil strong team spirit – you’ll roll your sleeves up and get stuck in
Have the desire to learn and improve yourself
Be fluent in English (second language is always a plus)
Have a ‘can do’ attitude (we are a small but growing team – we don’t have room for divas!)
Have good communication skills
