Location: Nottingham (with mix of commissioning and reactive service work on customer sites)

A rapidly expanding industrial engineering business delivering end-to-end automation and control system solutions for the warehouse and logistics industry. Their services span PLC programming, HMI software, hardware design, panel manufacture, installation, commissioning, and ongoing technical support.
The contractor
We are seeking a highly skilled Commissioning Engineer to take ownership of commissioning and testing electrical and control systems for a wide range of automated machinery. This role will be both site- and office-based, with blocks of work on client sites lasting up to 6 weeks. You’ll be at the heart of ensuring systems run smoothly, safely, and efficiently from installation through to handover.
Key Responsibilities
Commissioning and testing of electrical & control systems after build.
Running full commissioning phases on site.
On-site verification of new control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA.
Programming, modifying, and tuning software to optimise performance and resolve issues.
Troubleshooting electrical, pneumatic, and control component problems.
Executing and documenting functional test procedures to meet performance and safety standards.
Preparing and updating technical documentation (test reports, operating manuals, etc.).
Collaborating with project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients to align commissioning activities.
Training client operators and maintenance teams on proper system use and upkeep.
Working primarily with Siemens S7 systems and occasionally Allen Bradley.
Commissioning machines such as conveyors, robots, scanners, and stackers.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Carry out commissioning and verification of control systems on-site.
Modify PLC code and make software adjustments during start-up.
Perform fault-finding and resolve system-level and component-level issues.
Conduct functional and safety testing, providing clear documentation.
Collaborate with internal teams and client stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery.
Provide operator and maintenance training where required.
Required Skills & Experience
Background in commissioning within automation or production machinery.
Proven experience commissioning Siemens PLCs.
Ability to write, modify, and troubleshoot PLC code.
Strong knowledge of control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA.
Proficient in programming and troubleshooting control software.
Confident in interpreting electrical and pneumatic diagrams.
Understanding of industrial hardware such as motors, drives, and sensors.
Previous Siemens training (TIA Portal, Safety Systems & Siemens Drives) ideal, but not essential.
