An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Lead Technologist to join a rapidly growing Data and Decision Support capability within a forward-thinking and innovative organisation. This team delivers cutting-edge solutions across a range of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) domains, with applications spanning defence, security, space, and commercial sectors.
The capability’s work covers areas such as reinforcement learning, natural language processing (including large language models), knowledge graphs and graph neural networks, as well as AI solutions for radio frequency, electronic warfare, radar, sonar, acoustics, image and video recognition. This includes both traditional computer vision and remote sensing applications.
About the Role
The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in at least one core area of AI/ML, while also maintaining a broad understanding across multiple domains to support and guide colleagues. The role combines technical leadership with mentoring responsibilities, and involves close collaboration with customers, partners, and project stakeholders.
The Lead Technologist will provide engineering assurance across various programmes, leveraging their expertise to enhance the quality of bids, proposals, reports, and deliverables. This position also offers the chance to maintain academic collaborations and influence the direction of internal research agendas.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the technical delivery of complex AI projects, ensuring high-quality outputs across research, development, and reporting activities.
Identify emerging trends and potential research opportunities in collaboration with leading UK universities or strategic partners.
Present technical concepts to a variety of audiences, including non-technical stakeholders and external clients.
Provide technical mentoring and guidance to junior team members.
Conduct engineering assurance activities to uphold technical excellence across bids and project documentation.
Essential Skills and Experience:
PhD in a relevant field, with approximately 10+ years’ experience in AI/ML roles across industry or academia – ideally with exposure to the Defence sector.
Proven leadership of research and development teams (minimum of five team members).
Experience in engineering assurance and technical quality control.
Strong track record in writing research or funding proposals (e.g., Dstl, National Security, EPSRC).
Desired Technical Expertise (one or more of the following):
AI/ML for imagery analysis, including applications in remote sensing.
Reinforcement learning techniques.
Natural Language Processing and Large Language Models.
Knowledge graphs and graph-based neural networks.
AI/ML for RF and EW, radar, sonar, and acoustics.
Autonomy and intelligent agent system
