Senior Electrical Engineer
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage systems to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team. Expertise in control systems design and SCADA/telemetry is desirable.
About the Role
You will work within the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate, providing engineering leadership to deliver safe, reliable and sustainable assets and meet net zero commitments. You will manage and maintain electrical engineering standards, including safety rules for HV and LV power, control systems, and equipment across pumping stations, water management, flood defence structures and monitoring sites.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop, deliver and maintain electrical engineering standards and safety rules.
* Provide technical leadership and support across the organisation.
* Ensure compliance with national incident response requirements.
* Develop competency and skills guidance for employees working with electrical systems.
Experience and Skills
* Good knowledge of Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671/IET wiring regulations.
* Experience with control systems, IEC 61508, IEC 62061, BS EN 13489 and telemetry/SCADA.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience in developing safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage systems.
* Understanding of risk‑based electrical maintenance philosophies and FMEA.
* Drafting and publishing electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, teamwork and communication skills.
Additional Information
This hybrid role will be based near your home. You may need to travel occasionally. An incident management objective is part of your development plan.
