We are seeking a well‑motivated, enthusiastic, caring and compassionate Band 4 Dental Nurse to join our Head & Neck outpatients team. The role is based in the Elective Care Centre at the Aintree site of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
We are a busy Maxillofacial outpatients department with a multi‑disciplinary team that will support you throughout your development. We offer a range of clinics that will stretch and develop you, including Trauma, Oncology, Minor oral surgery, skin surgery, TMJ and many more. Responsibilities
Main duties and responsibilities include:
* Working flexibly within the dental team to provide high quality care to a wide spectrum of patients.
* Providing chair side assistance to clinicians within the dental service.
* Carrying out clerical and administrative duties to ensure efficient operation of the clinic/department.
* Maintaining a high standard of patient care and confidentiality within all dental clinics throughout the service.
* Preparing and monitoring patients for and during their dental treatment, providing pre‑ and post‑operative instructions as required.
* Undertaking the general care of the surgery, including dental equipment and instruments, and arranging any necessary repairs.
* Ensuring medical emergency drugs and equipment are available and up to date.
* Providing chair side assistance and postoperative instructions during general anaesthetic and exodontia sessions as required.
* Providing oral health education to patients as required by the clinician.
* Assisting the Senior Dental Nurse in the smooth running of the Dental service.
* Supporting and supervising all apprentice nurses, undergraduates and student disciplines.
* Assisting with the day‑to‑day organisation of the department to ensure continuity of standards.
* Providing Dental Nurse skills and services in accordance with the role.
* Working collaboratively and cooperatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their relatives.
* Participating in improvement of services and the quality of care provision.
* Maintaining high standards of patient care and staff morale by personal example, professional conduct and appearance.
* Working collaboratively with staff of other units and departments in matters that affect the department and patient care.
* Preparing patients prior to treatment/procedures, including pre‑ and post‑operative care instructions, acknowledging specialist areas of Oncology, Skin Lesions, Trauma, Orthognathic, Orthodontics and Restorative.
* Appropriate preparation of clinical area and maintenance of instrumentation required for minor operating, dental, orthodontic procedures.
* Completing data relating to patients and their treatment, maintaining accurate patient records.
* Performing 4‑handed Dentistry techniques in minor oral, dental and orthodontic procedures.
* Assisting in maintaining efficient stock control levels and ensuring the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registrable Dental Nurse qualification or NVQ Level III in Oral Healthcare.
* Must be registered with the General Dental Council as a Dental Care Professional.
* Evidence of maintenance/updated relevant Continued Professional Development.
* Further qualifications in basic first aid, health & safety and manual handling.
Experience
* Demonstrable recent experience of working as part of a dental team.
* Experience in a hospital setting.
Knowledge
* Up to date knowledge of the NHS as it relates to dentistry.
* Interest in oral health promotion.
* Knowledge of new strategies in dentistry.
Skills
* Excellent interpersonal oral and written skills.
* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, carers and staff at all levels.
* Basic IT skills.
* Ability to prioritise tasks.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
Other
* Empathy with all patient groups, including those with special needs.
* Willingness to accept that flexibility is required to meet the changing needs of the NHS.
