The Independent is an online news publisher that was established in 1986 as a national newspaper independent of party-political affiliations or proprietorial influence. In 2016, The Independent became a fully digital publisher, moving away from print in pursuit of sustainability, and to safeguard its values and journalism for the future.
The Independent has always thrived through innovation and change. It was the first British newspaper to add a Saturday magazine; the first to give photography the same prestige as news copy; the first to challenge the Westminster lobby system of closed briefings; the first broadsheet to move to the more compact ‘tabloid’ format; the first to launch a concise quality compact paper; and the first – and only – major newspaper to pull off a successful transformation to fully digital publishing.

In 2024 The Independent’s portfolio of brands increased through a new licencing partnership with BuzzFeed Inc. to operate the BuzzFeed brands in the UK - BuzzFeed UK, Tasty, Seasoned and HuffPost UK. The additional brands echo the existing business ethos and allow for increased audiences and a further strategic diversification of revenue streams.
Job purpose:
We are looking for a skilled and experienced Videographer to join our Independent Studio team. Reporting to the Director of Video Operations, this is a highly technical and creative role, suited to someone who thrives behind the camera and brings a sharp editorial eye to every shoot.
You’ll be the lead camera and sound operator across a variety of projects, from intimate sit-down interviews to multi-camera studio recordings and live events. You’ll work both independently and as part of a wider crew, with the confidence to direct on set when needed.
In addition to filming, you will also support post-production by editing video and audio content as needed. You should be proficient in Adobe Premiere Pro and Audition, with familiarity in After Effects considered a strong bonus. Experience with Descript is also desirable, especially for working on audio-first and transcription-based workflows. While this role is primarily production-focused, editing responsibilities will form part of your workload and require a keen eye for detail and storytelling.
You will also be responsible for the care, management, and maintenance of our camera, sound, and lighting equipment—taking pride in your tools and offering technical guidance to the wider business. Your expert knowledge will help shape the studio’s ongoing equipment strategy and ensure best-in-class production standards across our content.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities – what is delivered
* A highly experienced videographer, confident operating in studio and field settings
* Skilled in lighting design, with a strong grasp of how to shape mood, tone and visual identity across different formats
* Adept with camera systems, sound equipment and rigging setups, and able to troubleshoot on the fly
* Proficient in video and audio editing, with experience using Adobe Premiere Pro and Audition
* Familiar with other post-production tools, such as After Effects (desirable), and Descript (bonus)
* Comfortable leading technical setups solo or directing a crew on more complex shoots
* Proactive in the care and organisation of production equipment—able to identify issues early, manage repairs, and recommend upgrades
* Calm and professional in high-pressure environments, including with talent and contributors
* Passionate about current affairs, culture and storytelling—engaged with the kinds of topics The Independent covers
* Flexible and adaptable, with a willingness to travel and work varied hours, including occasional evenings or weekends
Skills
* Experience filming live events, festivals, or conferences
* Working knowledge of colour grading and post-production workflows
* Familiarity with The Independent’s visual style, brand values and tone of voice
* An understanding of media law, copyright, and permissions in visual journalism
