Power overseas projects across the globe
As an electrician at FCDO Services, you’ll undertake electrical installation works both at home and overseas. From new builds to offices refurbishments to upgrade works to maintenance, you’ll be assigned a variety of projects. You’ll be asked to work independently, to lead multi-skilled small teams, or to work as a larger part of a team.
At all times, you’ll prioritise safety and efficiency, working in accordance with FCDO Services processes and practices. You’ll represent us with professionalism and integrity. Engaging confidently with high-level diplomats, senior government officials, and international partners. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as you’ll produce clear, accurate and professional reports to inform decision making at the highest level.
When you’re based in the UK, you’ll manage preparatory work for future overseas installation. This will include the compilation of Bills of Quantities, as well as liaising with suppliers, Logistics and Project Management teams to ensure that the site is ready. Plus, you’ll use your knowledge and practical experience to provide support to team members overseas.
You’ll contribute to the design and planning of Electrical works. Following that, the installation, commissioning and reporting of electrical installations including: LV distribution, small power, lighting, containment systems, fire alarms, and air conditioning overseas in diplomatic missions.
Worldwide travel is a core part of this job. You’ll be required to spend up to 22 weeks a year on overseas installations, for periods that typically last 1 to 8 weeks.
Bring your electrical expertise to meaningful overseas work
To be eligible, you’ll have the following qualifications: NVQ Level 3 in electrical installations or equivalent, AM2 qualification or equivalent, City & Guilds 2391 Test and Inspection or equivalent, ECS Gold Card holder with minimum “Approved” grading, and a working knowledge of BS 7671: 2018. This will be matched by substantial experience in electrical installation, where you’ve practically applied your academic knowledge. It’s also key that you have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
When you’re assessed, we’ll be looking for these three core Civil Service competencies: making effective decisions, managing a quality service, and working together.
Working at FCDO Services is unique, so it would be beneficial if you’ve worked overseas, with other trades and/or in secure environments (government offices, prisons, banks) before. We’d also like to see a working knowledge and experience of security systems, fire alarms (including GENT Vigilon), emergency lighting systems, and air conditioning systems (with a F-Gas certificate). Familiarity with IT packages, including MS Office and MS Visio, would be a plus. For qualifications, it would be great if you’ve completed a recognised apprenticeship, a CITB Certificate for SMSTS/SSSTS, and a professional accreditation with the IET.
