Carrington West are working with Derby City Council to find a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Reactive Maintenance) on an initial 6-month contract.
This role is firmly focused on reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis, supporting council-owned buildings across Derby, including schools. You'll act as the technical lead when systems fail, identifying causes, specifying remedial works and ensuring safe, compliant outcomes.
The role
* Diagnose mechanical and heating system failures across council buildings
* Attend site, investigate faults and produce clear defect and condition reports
* Raise and manage work orders via the maintenance portal
* Provide mechanical and heating design input where required
* Supervise contractors and inspect works for quality and compliance
* Advise schools and stakeholders on maintenance priorities
* Ensure compliance with health & safety and energy efficiency standards
You’ll be site-based in Derby around 3 days per week.
About you
* Strong background in mechanical & heating maintenance
* Proven experience in reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis
* Previous "on the tools" experience highly desirable
* Gas certification and recognised mechanical qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 7, BTEC HNC/HND or similar)
* Confident producing technical reports and making engineering decisions

* Contract: Initial 6 months
* Hours: 37 per week
* Rate: £46.40 per hour (Inside IR35 - Umbrella)
