Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Power Electronics Engineer to join our client's innovative team in Cambridge. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design and development of cutting-edge power conversion systems, leveraging wide-bandgap semiconductors and high-frequency magnetics for next-generation applications.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the design and optimisation of planar magnetics, including PCB winding layout and electromagnetic simulation for high-density power converters.
* Design and test high-voltage LLC DC-DC converters operating above 500V, ensuring high efficiency and compact form factor.
* Work extensively with 650V and 1200V SiC and GaN devices, including selection, thermal management, and performance characterisation.
* Develop high-frequency gate driver circuits (up to 1 MHz) and associated auxiliary power supplies to support robust and fast switching.
* Perform simulation, schematic capture, PCB layout supervision, and prototype testing across the full development lifecycle.
* Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, and firmware teams to deliver integrated system solutions.
* Support DVT, EMC compliance, and safety certification processes as required.
Key Requirements:
* Degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related discipline.
* Proven hands-on experience in:
* Planar transformer design and layout using PCB-based windings.
* SiC and GaN power device implementation in real-world power converter designs.
* High-voltage LLC resonant converter topologies.
* High-frequency gate drive circuits and power stage integration.
* Strong analytical and simulation skills using tools such as LTspice, PLECS, Altium, ANSYS, or equivalent.
* Experience with lab equipment and test procedures for high-voltage power electronics.
* Ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative engineering environment.
Desirable:
* Knowledge of EMI/EMC mitigation techniques in power converters.
* Experience in thermal modelling and magnetic material characterisation.
* Familiarity with digital control of power converters (e.g., using DSP or MCU platforms).
