Job Summary
This post supports the Lead Pharmacist for Anaesthetics, Critical Care and Theatres in the provision of a clinical pharmacy service to the critical care unit (approx. 50%), theatres and the surgical wards (approx. 50%) at this busy district general hospital. The post holder provides advice to the critical care department and theatres, and works on behalf of pharmacy to support perioperative management. The pharmacist works alongside other members of the multidisciplinary team, including consultants, junior doctors, advanced critical care practitioners and a range of specialist nurses, specialist pharmacists, junior pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to provide a robust clinical service.
Responsibilities
* Providing a core clinical pharmacy service to Critical and Perioperative care inpatients in line with the Trust's clinical pharmacy standards.
* Ensuring high quality, patient‑centred, and cost effective pharmaceutical care is provided for the patients.
* Working alongside the critical care team to ensure the Department of Health Adult critical care D05 commissioning services and Guidelines for the Provision of Intensive care Services (GPICS) standards for pharmacy are met.
* Actively providing medicines information and medication counselling to health care professionals, patients and/or carers, with an awareness of current trends and up to date research in the specialist area(s).
* Working with multiprofessional teams across the critical care, anaesthesia and surgical directorates to produce, and review, medication guidelines that promote rational, economical and evidence based prescribing; with appropriate monitoring practice to ensure policies and guidelines are adhered to.
* Working with relevant staff to participate in nationally required, and clinically appropriate, audits, research and risk management strategies.
* Support the lead pharmacists with drug budget management with the provision of evaluated medicine expenditure information to designated managers and clinicians within the critical care, anaesthesia and surgical directorates. Give specific advice on measures to control expenditure within best practice. Participate in cost‑savings initiatives.
Qualifications
* Essential: Masters Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent; Registered pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council; Post‑Graduate Diploma in clinical pharmacy (or equivalent) or working towards (desirable for progressive post).
* Desirable: Registered Independent Prescriber (or willing to train); Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society; Member of UK clinical pharmacy association (UKCPA); Previous attendance on the ‘UKCPA Starting out in critical care’ course (or equivalent).
Experience
* Essential: Post‑registration experience covering a range of specialties as a clinical pharmacist; Clinical supervision of junior staff; Evidence demonstrating competencies that meet the RPS Post Registration Foundation Pharmacist Curriculum.
* Desirable: Experience of providing a clinical pharmacy service in a hospital environment; Experience of deputising for a more senior clinical pharmacist; RPS Core Advanced Curriculum or equivalent; Clinical Research experience, or willingness to undertake; Experience of training staff using coaching or teaching methods; Knowledge of risk management principles.
