NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and compassionate Registered Nurse to join the Acute Oncology Assessment Unit (AOAU) at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. This dynamic and fast-paced unit provides unscheduled care to patients with oncological or haematological malignancies who become acutely unwell either while attending outpatient or day-case treatment areas, or following referral from home via the Cancer Treatment Helpline (CTH).
The AOAU operates under a nurse-led model of care, supported by a team of experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs). The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care within the unit, working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to assess, manage, and support patients requiring urgent oncology input. Where clinically appropriate, patients are managed as day cases and discharged home, ensuring timely and effective care
In addition to clinical responsibilities within the AOAU, the postholder will also play a key role in the Cancer Treatment Helpline. This involves telephone triage and clinical assessment of patients experiencing symptoms or side effects related to their cancer or treatment. The role requires effective communication with patients, carers, and healthcare professionals across primary and secondary care to ensure safe and appropriate management.
This post is primarily Monday to Friday to align with the AOAU’s operational hours of 08:00 to 20:00, with occasional weekend cover required to support the helpline service. This is an excellent opportunity for a nurse seeking to develop their skills in acute oncology within a supportive and expert-led environment.
Applications are sought from oncology/haematology nurses or those within an acute care setting who have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, evidence of effective team-working while also being able to work autonomously, and a passion for cancer care. Applicants must be a Registered General Nurse with current NMC registration and provide evidence of continuing professional development.
