The Corporate Debt Welfare Officer will work alongside a dedicated debt recovery team to review cases with outstanding debts to the local authority (Council Tax and other miscellaneous debts) and develop more effective processes to prevent debt occurrence and address it early.
They will provide essential support to customers facing financial difficulties, often with vulnerabilities, working to understand their circumstances, discover underlying issues, and collaborate to find solutions.
Responsibilities include completing and verifying customer assessments and change of circumstances through home visits, postal, caller, and telephone reviews, in accordance with legislation, policies, case law, and council procedures.
The role aims to improve customer outcomes by offering support, advice, and assistance in financial, housing, digital, debt, and budgeting areas to maximize household income. It also involves arranging support for applications to discretionary funds such as Discretionary Housing Payments, the Help scheme, and the Council Tax Reduction Scheme Hardship Fund.
This is an exciting new position within the Corporate Debt team, requiring multitasking and extensive customer contact.
Essential skills include a good knowledge of Welfare Benefits, Local Authority Billing and Debt legislation, and a sound understanding of Debt Recovery processes and options.
