About the Role:
We are seeking a highly capable and motivated Electrical Design Engineer to join our renewables-focused design team. The role involves the electrical design of grid connections, working for an Independent Connections Provider (ICP). The Electrical Design Engineer will be responsible for designing adoptable electrical networks from low voltage up to high voltage (typically 11kV to 132kV) and ensuring all designs adhere to industry, DNO, IDNO, and ENA G81 standards. This role requires not only technical drawing and calculation skills, but also client interaction and compliance management.
Key Responsibilities:
* Design grid connections for renewable energy projects including solar PV, onshore wind and BESS.
* Design adoptable electrical networks from low voltage up to and including high voltage (11kV, 33kV, 132kV).
* Prepare and submit design documentation to utility standards, such as DNO, IDNO, and ENA G81.
* Specify substation switchgear, transformers, cable sizing, and associated network equipment.
* Conduct substation earthing assessments and related calculations.
* Produce CAD-based design drawings, including single-line diagrams and schematics.
* Undertake power system calculations with relevant software (e.g., Amtech, PowerFactory, ERACS, WinDebut).
* Support land rights applications and track design delivery stages.
* Liaise with clients, contractors, DNOs, IDNOs, manufacturers, and stakeholders to discuss design activities and address technical queries.
* Ensure projects comply with health & safety, CDM, BS 7671, and other regulatory standards.
* Provide technical support to tendering, construction, and commissioning teams as needed.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
* Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
* Proven experience in a design role within an ICP, DNO, or electrical consultancy, preferably with a focus on renewable energy.
* Solid understanding of renewable generation technologies (e.g solar PV, wind, BESS) and associated grid connection challenges.
* Proficient in using AutoCAD, and electrical design tools such as Amtech and ETAP.
* Strong understanding of G81, ENA ER standards, and DNO specific design requirements.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable:
* Working knowledge of ICP/IDNO networks and asset adoption requirements.
* Awareness of National Grid / DNO connection processes including budget estimates, G99 submissions and point of connection assessments.
* Membership or working towards membership of the IET or similar professional body.
What We Offer:
* Competitive salary.
* Career development and training opportunities.
* Opportunity to work exclusively on renewable energy infrastructure projects that directly support the UK's net-zero goals.
* A collaborative, mission-driven work environment.
