Job Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to join a high‑calibre consultant peer group in the heart of London and work with an established multidisciplinary Community Mental Health Team in South Westminster.

This is a full‑time, existing and substantive post within the South Westminster Mental Health Hub, specifically the West End PCN team. The post holder will provide consultant and RC responsibility for service users in the West End PCN team.


Job Description (RC Pending)

Main duties of the job

* Provide senior medical responsibility for the patients managed by the team and support all members of the multidisciplinary team.
* Support recruitment, ensure optimal retention, and uphold morale.
* Ensure good service quality and performance.
* Support GPs and primary‑care clinicians in delivering mental health care.
* Optimise links with voluntary‑sector partners to support patient care.
* Meet training needs of psychiatry trainees, medical students, and other junior clinical staff.

Principal Clinical duties of the post holder

* Provide senior clinical advice and support during daily triage, MDT, and other clinical team meetings.
* Ensure all referrals are triaged daily and responded to in a timely manner.
* Assess new patients and supervise assessments carried out by other team members.
* Review complex‑needs patients to ensure appropriate care packages are in place.
* Manage Mental Health Act related work (including CTOs and patients on restriction orders).
* Conduct domiciliary visits and assessments, including emergency responses and occasional psychiatric assessments in adjacent boroughs.
* Address physical health needs of patients.
* Monitor caseload and facilitate discharges to maintain patient flow.
* Develop good working relationships with local GPs, other providers, and external agencies (HTT, Psychiatric Liaison Services, AMHPs, forensic services).
* Maintain liaison with voluntary sector services to support and promote recovery.
* Follow cross‑cover protocol to ensure appropriate cover during absences.

Leadership responsibilities

* Lead the quality agenda; identify improvement areas and engage with QI.
* Meet regularly with the team and service managers to ensure quality, finance, and performance targets are met.
* Recruit, retain, and line‑manage junior and senior trainees, specialty doctors, and other clinical staff.
* Provide teaching for medical students and trainees.
* Engage in service developments and link with Primary Care Networks.

Teaching and training

* Supervise psychiatry trainees and middle‑grade doctors; collaborate with local tutors and the Trust DME.
* Participate in the postgraduate teaching programme, including a Wednesday lunchtime academic meeting with a journal club and case presentations.
* Support medical students attending CMHT and work‑experience students.
* Train and teach wider MDT staff across community and other borough teams.

General duties

* Manage, appraise, and professionally supervise junior medical staff in accordance with Trust policies.
* Ensure junior staff operate within the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
* Complete administrative duties related to patient care and record clinical activity accurately.
* Contribute to service and business planning, annual consultant appraisals, and internal CPD programmes.
* Maintain professional registration with the GMC, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and professional codes of conduct.
* Collaborate with local managers on efficient service running and support financial management of the service.


Person Specification

Qualifications – Essential Criteria

* MB, BS or equivalent medical qualification.
* Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at appointment.
* Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months.
* Approved clinician status (or able to achieve within three months).
* Approved under S12.

Qualifications – Desirable Criteria

* Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management.
* Additional clinical qualifications.
* MRCPsych or equivalent.
* Wide range of specialist and sub‑specialist experience relevant to NHS or comparable services.
* Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit, and service improvement (awards, prizes, publications).

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience – Essential Criteria

* Excellent knowledge in specialty.
* Excellent clinical skills using a bio‑psycho‑social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
* Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
* Decision‑making based on evidence and experience.
* Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA.

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience – Desirable Criteria

* Wide range of specialist and sub‑specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.

Transport – Essential Criteria

* Ability to use public transport for patient travel if indicated.

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning – Essential Criteria

* Ability to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.
* Participation in continuous professional development.
* Participation in research or service evaluation.
* Ability to use and appraise clinical evidence.
* Active participation in clinical audit.

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning – Desirable Criteria

* Planning and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Reflection on CPD undertaken.
* Experience in clinical research and/or service evaluation.
* Evidenced achievement in education, research, audit, and service improvement.
* Leadership in clinical audits leading to service change.
