The Assistant Director: Camp Care at Camp Galil is responsible for supporting the mental, emotional, and social well-being of all campers and staff members. This staff member will serve as a critical component of our Camper Care Team and guide Galil in creating a welcoming environment for all. The Assistant Director: Camp Care will assist staff with managing social dynamics and meeting camper needs. Regular communication with parents will be essential to foster collaboration for camper success. The role involves ensuring the well-being of each camper and staff member, focusing on Mental, Emotional, and Social Health (MESH).
This position offers an opportunity to leverage professional experience in a role with seasonal flexibility, working alongside year-round staff and a youth leadership team. The focus is on strategic, thoughtful, and intentional care to ensure high-quality support for participants. The primary goal is to support campers through hands-on care and being a resource for staff working with children aged 7 to 18. The role also involves being a key contact for parents during the summer. Success depends on practical experience in child development, social work, group dynamics, adolescent behavior, and behavior management.
The role requires flexibility and collaboration with Galil’s professional and seasonal leadership teams. The position involves year-round work, living on-site, with full-time duties from June to August and part-time during the off-season (Sept-May). The Assistant Director: Camp Care reports directly to the Executive Director and works with the Camper Care team, including youth leadership and medical staff.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Leading in staff training on mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health (MESSH);
2. Providing resources and creating environments where campers and staff can thrive;
3. Managing and communicating camper needs and documenting plans;
4. Maintaining relationships with parents/caregivers regarding camper needs;
5. Providing counseling and interventions as appropriate;
6. Building trust and partnership with camp families;
7. Recruiting campers and maintaining relationships year-round;
8. Leading family/parent communication on mental, social, and emotional health;
9. Overseeing camper intake and screening for support needs;
10. Reviewing camper files and documenting care situations;
11. Participating actively on-site as part of the community.
Key Qualifications include:
1. Graduate-level or higher degree in a mental health field (e.g., social work, psychology, mental health counseling, family therapy);
2. 3-5 years of post-graduate experience in a related field;
3. Prior camp experience working with children is preferred;
4. Exceptional engagement and relationship-building skills with children, young adults, and parents;
5. Proven ability to provide emotional support across age ranges;
6. Creativity in strategies to include campers with varying needs in mainstream programs.
