We are seeking a highly skilled and professionally registered Northern-Ireland British Sign Language (NIBSL) Interpreter to facilitate clear, effective, and impartial communication between Deaf BSL users and hearing individuals. The interpreter will work across diverse domains, including but not limited to, legal, medical, educational, and corporate settings, adhering strictly to professional codes of conduct.
Key Responsibilities
* Interpretation: Provide accurate and culturally appropriate interpretation between NIBSL and spoken English in both simultaneous and consecutive modes.
* Contextual Understanding: Prepare for assignments by researching subject matter, specialised vocabulary, and relevant cultural or industry context (e.g., medical terminology, legal procedures).
* Impartiality and Confidentiality: Maintain strict professional boundaries, neutrality, and absolute confidentiality regarding all information interpreted during assignments.
* Professional Conduct: Adhere to the Code of Conduct stipulated by the National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People (NRCPD) or the Regulatory Body for Sign Language Interpreters and Translators (RBSLI).
* Cultural Competence: Demonstrate a profound understanding of Deaf culture, communication needs, and community dynamics to ensure effective service delivery.
* Team Working: Where necessary, work effectively as part of an interpreting team (co-working) for long or highly complex assignments, ensuring seamless communication transfer.
* Professional Development: Engage actively in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) as required by the registering body to maintain skills and registration status.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
* Registration: Must hold current registration as a Registered Sign Language
* Linguistic Proficiency: Fluency at Level 6 (or equivalent) in both British Sign Language (BSL) and written/spoken English.
* Formal Qualification: A recognised, relevant interpreting qualification.
