Role Purpose
The Senior Acoustic Consultant will lead technical delivery of acoustic projects, ensuring high-quality, compliant, practical advice. The role will involve supervising junior staff, being a technical lead on larger or more complex contracts, maintaining client relationships, and contributing to business development. The Senior Consultant should help ensure we continue to provide cost-effective, technically robust acoustic solutions that satisfy both client needs and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage the planning, execution, and delivery of acoustics and noise/vibration consultancy projects, including impact assessments, sound insulation testing, building & architectural acoustics, industrial noise, regulatory compliance, etc.
* Undertake noise & vibration measurements, surveys, monitoring, and post-processing of data; ensure correct instrumentation, quality assurance, and adherence to relevant standards / regulations.
* Carry out modelling, predictions, and assessment of noise impacts from transport (road, rail, aircraft), industrial sources, piling, etc.
* Provide sound insulation testing and Part E compliance (or similar building regulation) services; manage or undertake pre-completion tests, sound-insulation specifications and compliance reporting.
* Produce technical reports, including impact assessments, mitigation proposals, cost-benefit analyses, and specifications for noise control measures; ensure clarity, accuracy, compliance with regulatory and client requirements.
* Liaise with clients (developers, architects, planning consultants, local authorities etc.), regulators, other consultants, and stakeholders; present findings, defend proposals, participate in meetings/discussions.
* Mentor and supervise junior acoustic consultants / technicians; provide technical guidance, training, quality checking of their work.
* Keep up-to-date with legislation, guidance, standards, and best practice in acoustics & noise (UK and where relevant, EU / international), and ensure company policies and technical practices reflect current requirements.
* Contribute to business development: prepare proposals/quotations, identify opportunities for new work, assist in building our reputation and client base (e.g. presentations, networking).
* Possibly act as expert witness when required (litigation, planning inquiries, etc.).
Person Specification
Essential Skills, Qualifications & Experience
* A degree in Acoustics, Environmental Noise, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or similarly relevant field.
* Chartered or near-Chartered status preferred (e.g. IOA, IEMA, or equivalent).
* Significant post-qualification experience (usually 5+ years) working in acoustic consultancy or similar environment.
* Demonstrable experience of noise & vibration measurement, modelling, assessment and mitigation.
* Strong experience with sound insulation testing / building acoustics (including compliance with Part E / ANC / UKAS / relevant building regulations).
* Competent report writing skills; ability to produce high quality, concise, well-structured technical reports.
* Good client-facing skills: able to explain technical matters to non-specialists; confident in meetings, negotiations, and presentations.
* Ability to mentor/supervise more junior staff, including oversight of technical work and development of their skills.
* Good project management skills: able to plan, budget, manage time, and deliver within deadlines.
* Familiarity with relevant UK standards, regulations and guidance (e.g. BS 4142, BS 8233, UK Government planning guidance, Noise Policy Statement for England, etc.).
* Experience with expert witness work or litigation.
* Knowledge of international acoustic standards and practice.
* Experience designing or specifying acoustic materials / mitigation solutions.
* Experience in a variety of sectors: residential, industrial, transport, planning, etc.
* Experience with business development or marketing proposals.
* Membership of relevant professional bodies (e.g. IOA, CIEH, CIHT etc.).
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Attention to detail and quality.
* Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a small/medium team.
