OverviewUniversity Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fixed-term opportunity for a Senior Research Fellow in neurosurgery. Start Date: August 2026. Contract Type: Fixed term. Duration: 12 months. Purpose for Fixed Term: Training Contract. The post provides structured training and supervised clinical development with opportunities for educational work aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.Please see below for the detailed job description of the role.
Main duties and responsibilitiesThis post is jointly funded by UHS and the NIHR CRN and provides training in clinical neurosurgery and in the management and conduct of clinical research. The neurosurgery research programme at the Wessex Neurological Centre is the largest neurovascular programme in the UK. The role offers exposure to all aspects of clinical research from trial design, setup and recruitment to data collection and analysis.Successful candidates will be part of a team of 4 research fellows working on different aspects of neurovascular disorders, with support from the wider research community within the Trust. They will participate in the Wessex Clinical Research Network Clinical Research Fellows training programme and statistics courses and receive certification.Successful candidates will be encouraged to develop their own research project and pilot data, supporting progression towards a higher degree and potential funding from national bodies such as NIHR. The role aims to provide understanding of neurosurgical research for future clinical careers and to support development of a particular area of interest toward application for a higher degree and an academic pathway.

Detailed Job Description and Main ResponsibilitiesYou will split your time equally between clinical care of neurosurgical patients (in theatre, on the wards and in outpatients) and supporting clinical studies in Neurovascular disease and traumatic brain injury at the Wessex Neurological Centre. Additional InformationAppointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions for Trust-appointed fellow doctors and dentists. Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet Home Office criteria prior to applying. The position offers an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, with a named educational supervisor. Continued Professional Development (CPD) opportunities are supported, with options for study leave.Salary is based on experience and skills, with a nodal point linked to the grade. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration for hours (e.g., weekend allowances) is defined in the doctors’ work schedule and national pay scales. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5 include: 6 years of specialty training, relevant higher specialty exam (e.g., FRCP, FRCA, FRCS), and a portfolio demonstrating progression criteria.
