Job overview Senior Critical Care ECMO Specialist Nurse - Band 7 We are excited to recruit for a senior critical care ECMO specialist nurse to join our Adult Critical Care Unit at St. Bartholomew's Hospital. This key role supports the ECMO service and the provision of critical care expertise, through the delivery of specialist education, clinical support, and training. With a strong clinical focus this post offers the opportunity for an individual to contribute to the ongoing development of our service, utilise their advanced clinical skills and knowledge, and gain further experience in audit, research, and guideline development. Main duties of the job The senior critical care ECMO specialist nurse is an essential member of the critical care team with specific responsibility for supporting patients requiring advanced critical care therapies, including Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). The successful candidate will be a clinical expert, responsible for directing care and providing advanced knowledge and skills, to ensure the aims and objectives of both the critical care unit and ECMO service are met. As a clinical leader the successful post holder will provide direct supervision and facilitate training and educational opportunities for staff to achieve and maintain the required ECMO and critical care competencies relevant to their role. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria NMC registration Adult critical care course Adult ECLS education/training programme Relevant first degree or equivalent Mentorship course or equivalent Adult ILS / ALS provider Leadership programme or equivalent Adult transfer / transport experience Desirable criteria Masters or working towards Post graduate certification in Education SIM Debrief /Train the Trainer course Experience Essential criteria Extensive post registration experience in specialist setting Evidence of Adult ECMO and critical care knowledge Experience in prioritising and managing own caseload Management and delivery of teaching activities Mentoring and assessing learners in practice Experience of audit Experience of managing challenging situations Desirable criteria Experience in team management Experience in developing and co-ordinating education programmes Development of new initiatives Evidence of participation in quality improvement Knowledge Essential criteria Aware of how to introduce and evaluate new initiatives and pathways Able to critically reflect on clinical practice and patients experience Can interpret and analyse complex amounts of clinical data Knowledgeable of current professional issues in nursing Aware of ELSO recommendations for speciality Aware of service improvement specifications e.g. NHS framework, NICE guidelines Desirable criteria Undertaken clinical / nursing research Research published in professional and or peer reviewed journals Presentation at national and international conferences Knowledge of quality improvement methodology Skills Essential criteria Excellent and up to date clinical skills in adult specialist setting Skilled at preparing and writing clear, accurate and concise reports Ability to work within a team effectively Able to provide direct supervision and support to others Ability to manage own workload and work to agreed timescales Positive attitude and ability to work under pressure Adaptable to changing workload Proactive in identifying own learning needs Desirable criteria Ability to assess potential risks involved in work activities and processes Other requirements Essential criteria Able to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service.
