Job Description
NBC News Digital is hiring an ambitious editor with exceptional news judgment to oversee its weekend coverage and late weekday international coverage. This role is based in London.
The position carries major responsibilities, namely being the sole news editor on for NBCNews.com during overnight U.S. hours on Saturdays and Sundays (7 a.m. to 3 p.m. BST). During the week, they’ll work a late shift (noon to 8 p.m. BST) editing and writing top world stories of the day.
The person in this role must have the ability to commission stories that appeal to an American audience, and deal with major breaking news swiftly and accurately. They should be an exceptional words editor.
In one given day, this editor may work with a staff reporter on sharpening an original reporting pitch. On another they may be the editor running live coverage of the war in Ukraine for the entire shift. On another, they may need to handle a piece of breaking news — either out of the U.S. or internationally — and decide if they should assign out the first several paragraphs or write it themselves.
This person should be comfortable driving and writing news with digital colleagues as well as correspondents in the field, producers, bookers and other broadcast stakeholders. The successful candidate will be able to deliver clear guidance and collaborate effectively with colleagues in London, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and elsewhere, and juggle multiple tasks to help create urgent, revelatory and interesting journalism.
Key Responsibilities
Main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Edit NBCNews.com from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. GMT on weekends and three late shifts on weekdays.
* Work across the digital team as well as broadcast editors, producers and correspondents to coordinate coverage on breaking news. Understanding that each platform has different goals and processes, and how to work through that, is key.
* Provide rigorous and artful edits, work with journalists to find new ways of turning raw reporting into compelling digital coverage, and write accurate and engaging headlines.
* Think creatively about unique reporting and story angles that can be pursued exclusively.
* Be exceptionally well read on global affairs, especially major storylines.
* Be an excellent team player, and deal with colleagues throughout the organization with unfailing professionalism, cordiality and politeness.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
* Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
* Extensive experience as a reporter and / or an editor in a newsroom environment, and some of that time in a digital newsroom working on news of day.
* A highly collaborative all-rounder who can deliver clear guidance and efficiently juggle multiple tasks to help create unique and impactful digital content.
* Be able to identify the most important and relevant angles of the day’s top stories, and commission and edit breaking news stories and bounces.
* Demonstrate an understanding of global affairs and stories that resonate with an American audience, and leverage NBC News’ global networks.
* Demonstrable ability to take feedback and guidance, and exchange ideas with colleagues and managers politely and professionally.
