The Environment Agency has a broad remit to protect and enhance the environment. Water is central to drinking, washing, recreation, industry and health. Clean and available water is essential as it becomes an increasingly scarce resource, and we need to protect it.
Role overview
We need your knowledge and experience to help advise water companies on their plans and hold them to account for protecting the water environment. You will be part of teams that ensure our environment is protected now and for future generations.
What will you do
You will work alongside Water Quality Officers to establish and embed Bathing Waters work in our teams and support the Operational community of practice to fulfil its responsibilities. This includes:
* Assessing Water Company proposals to meet bathing water standards
* Developing innovative methods to achieve bathing water objectives
* Working with Environment Agency teams (e.g., Local Area Integrated Environmental Planning and National Water Quality Guidance Teams)
* Engaging with water companies and external stakeholders to achieve Bathing Waters outcomes
Responding to incidents is a central part of the role. You may have an incident role and provide business continuity support during incidents. Training is provided and additional payment may apply.
Team and working arrangements
Operations Catchment Services works to secure outcomes across key stakeholders and invest in the water environment. The post is part of the OCS Water Quality team. We take a one-business approach and work closely with colleagues across the organisation. We are a dispersed team; travel for meetings is expected. Training and mentoring are provided.
Essential experience and skills
* Knowledge of water quality planning, bathing water regulations, understanding of the water industry and price review processes
* Excellent communication and networking skills with a range of Environment Agency colleagues and external stakeholders
* Ability to analyse technical information
* Experience presenting technical information to a wide audience
* Organisational, planning, tracking, delivery and evaluation skills to meet standards and timescales
* Work experience in an environmental discipline (e.g., water companies, environmental consultancies, regulatory roles, research/education, environmental charities)
Desirable qualifications
* Degree or postgraduate qualification in an environmental discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Ecology, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Data Science and analytics)
* Experience in water quality modelling

You will work as part of a dispersed team and travel for national meetings with occasional overnight stays.
