Greenock Health and Care Centre

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The role:

The post holder will be responsible for assessment, diagnosis and management of own caseload, maintaining associated records, providing speech and language therapy intervention to children up to 18 years old from admission to discharge. Their role will be to deliver Stage 1 / Pre-referral activity and to participate in delivery of indirect patient care, e.g. training / teaching packages, within a multi-agency approach.

It is essential that you have a Degree in Speech and Language Therapy and have current registration with the HCPC.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

1. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist interested in working within the Inverclyde HSCP area
2. The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday
3. Interviews are planned to go ahead on the 1st of April 2026

Key responsibilities:

4. Assess, diagnose and provide therapy as appropriate to children and young people with speech, language and communication difficulties and/ or eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties including the planning and delivery of therapy programmes tailored to suit the needs of individuals
5. Manage and prioritise own caseload as an autonomous practitioner, analysing clients risk and need.
6. To effectively supervise all work delegated to Clinical Support workers
7. Engage effectively in clinical supervision, peer review, operational management and Care Aims arrangements and processes that are critical to the effective delivery of SLT services
8. Where appropriate and required, review referrals in conjunction with SLT Team Leader/SLT Manager within the locality team, making decisions regarding referral of cases to other agencies as appropriate, e.g., CAMHS, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Educational Psychology for further investigation or diagnosis
9. Evaluate programmes of therapy and progress patient care using evidence based practice through the service towards discharge
10. Make decisions regarding discharge of clients from the service
11. Maintain accurate client records and contemporaneous notes, ensuring client confidentiality and adherence to the Data Protection Act, and provide accurate and timely written and verbal reports
12. Work collaboratively with education staff, families and medical staff in order jointly to devise and implement individual education plans (IEPs)/goals and to ensure effective multi-professional working
13. Attend and contribute to uni- and multi-professional meetings and case conferences regarding specific clients
14. Participate in the delivery of induction training and supervision/support of SLT support staff
15. Access CPD opportunities in line with Departmental appraisal and training strategies and guidelines as part of an agreed Personal Development Plan
16. Provide a range of activity statistical information as required by the SLT service

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

18. Appropriate Ordinary/Honours degree in Speech and Language Pathology or equivalent
19. Certificate to Practice as a Speech and Language Therapist as awarded by the RCSLT
20. Continuing registration with Health Professions Council (HPC)
21. Understanding of wider service issues, connections and priorities
22. Proven ability to work effectively both independently and with others
23. Excellent presentation skills, both written and verbal
24. Excellent organisations skills and ability to facilitate these skills in others
25. Prioritisation skills ability to prioritise resources within clinic service area in consultation with line manager
26. Understanding and awareness of national and local policies and procedures relevant to health, social services and education
27. Understanding and awareness of a range of appropriate therapeutic tools (relevant to the service area) and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits
28. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
29. High level of reflective practice skills
