We have an exciting new opportunity for an experienced Planning professional to the lead and manage the Development Management Section at Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council. This is an exciting time to join Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council. Our planning service is evolving, and we’re looking for an exceptional Development Manager to play a leading role in this transformation. As a key member of the Planning Management Team, you will lead on a wide range of planning projects, help shape the future of our borough, and contribute to the delivery of a high-performing, customer-focused service. This is a leadership role where you will oversee planning staff, work closely with colleagues across the council, and drive forward innovation and service improvements. Your leadership will be instrumental in delivering this work and ensuring that we balance the need for growth with the protection of our unique and diverse environment, 70% of the borough lies within the Green Belt and nearly 27% is designated as Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You will be central to delivering the Council’s ambitions for sustainable growth while safeguarding our rich natural and historic assets. With major regeneration plans for Tonbridge town centre and several other ambitious development projects in the pipeline, this is a role that offers real variety, challenge, and opportunity. We are seeking a motivated and experienced professional who is driven to lead. You will be instrumental in shaping how we deliver against our corporate priorities, adding value to the team and a range of key projects. You will have strong leadership skills, a collaborative approach, and a commitment to service excellence. Experience in developing and mentoring staff, as well as managing change, will be essential. As Development Manager, you will take overall responsibility for the effective and efficient running of the Development Management service, including Planning Enforcement and the Tree Service. You will need to be a member of the MRTPI with a strong track record of delivering high-quality outcomes, managing performance, and inspiring teams. Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential, along with a passion for high-quality development and placemaking.
