About the role
Implement and manage the control of the design process to ensure that the design and procurement of specialist packages are delivered to meet project requirements and are in line with cost parameters.
Support the Work Winning/Project Delivery teams by providing design input and cost-effective solutions.
The role may require you to work independently or as part of a team.
What you'll be doing
1. Manage the development and implementation of design proposals ensuring they meet customer requirements including budget constraints, presenting proposals for approval to the customer. The design should deliver:
* Safety in construction and use
* Quality within affordable parameters
* Ease of maintenance, energy efficiency with minimum environmental impact
* Innovation to meet customer goals and positive impact on the local community
* Maintain records of all inputs and outputs including tracking formal submissions and approvals
1. Contribute to or complete the project design responsibilities matrix.
2. Manage and ensure effective briefing of the Design Team including M&E elements, managing any third parties or novated design teams to meet all customer specifications and checking their competence and resources.
3. Provide advice on the “buildability” of design proposals to the design and construction teams on all packages.
4. Liaise with statutory bodies/authorities as required – such as town planning, building control, and services (gas, water).
5. Lead the development and management of the design deliverables programme, including scheduling, gate reviews, and progress reporting.
6. Lead the implementation of BIM CSUK protocols, including teamwork, collaboration, and data sharing.
7. Ensure BIM management during the project, ensuring the supply chain is aware of BIM requirements.
8. Apply Lean construction techniques to save money, reduce waste, and optimize construction.
9. Capture learning and best practices from projects to share across the business.
10. Collaborate on scope definition for subcontractors regarding their design responsibilities.
11. Proactively contribute to Risk and Value Management processes.
12. Live the Balfour Beatty Values and ensure a focus on Zero Harm.
13. Support the delivery of the CSUK Sustainability 2020 roadmap.
Who we're looking for
* Proven experience in delivering design services within a Work Winning and/or Project Delivery environment, successfully implementing design strategies.
* Leadership skills in a matrix organization to deliver design services timely with a customer and sector focus.
* Good interpersonal and communication skills for effective relationships under time pressure.
* Good knowledge of BIM and current procurement methods.
* Relevant professional membership (e.g., RIBA, BIBSE, IET) and a valid CSCS card.
* Excellent IT skills, especially Microsoft Office.
* Knowledge of codes of practice and regulatory material applicable to the business stream.
* Desire for continuous innovation and development, focused on customer needs.
* Numeracy and bid/report writing skills.
