Deputy Charge Nurse – Band 6, Emergency Department (UCLH, London)

Contract: 12‑month fixed term (secondment cover). Working hours: 37.5 hours per week.


Job overview

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Nurse to join our team as a Band 6 Deputy Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department. This role provides the opportunity to lead shifts, develop your leadership skills, and contribute to a highly regarded Foundation Trust with a 21.7 million pound redevelopment of our Emergency department.


Main duties of the job

When in charge you will: manage and supervise nursing staff within the ED during your shift and in partnership with the Consultant in Charge; assist Senior Nurses and Charge Nurses in providing quality care and meeting Performance Indicators (CQIs); ensure the educational needs of the ED are met; and coordinate the ED response during major incidents (MAJAX).

Your work will also include: professional conduct in line with the NMC Code and relevant guidelines; acting as a deputy for ward organisation and development of ward/department management skills; promoting and implementing UCLH Nursing & Midwifery strategy and core standards; developing and implementing Audit, Quality and Risk Management initiatives; teaching, facilitating, mentoring and precepting student nurses; and collaborating with the medical and senior operations teams.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role of the Deputy Charge Nurse within the Emergency Department is key to ensuring the safe care of patients attending the UCH as emergencies. When in charge, you will be responsible for ensuring the management and supervision of the nursing staff within the ED during your shift along with the Consultant in Charge of the department. You will assist the Senior Nurse and Charge Nurses in leading the nursing staff in ensuring quality of care and meeting and sustaining performance against the Care Quality Indicators (CQIs) for Emergency Services. You will assist the Senior Nurse and Charge Nurses to ensure the educational needs of the ED are met. In the event of a major incident (MAJAX) you will be responsible for assisting in the co‑ordination of the ED response.

Professional Conduct: Work according to the NMC Code and relevant guidelines as a named nurse, ensuring high standards of patient care, assessing nursing and health education needs, and managing care programmes, including discharge planning.

Ward Management: Act as a deputy for ward organisation and management, developing skills in ward/department management and providing leadership in the absence of the senior sister/charge nurse.

Strategy Implementation: Promote and implement UCLH Nursing & Midwifery strategy and Core Standards, contributing to the Trust’s “Top 10” Objectives.

Quality Initiatives: Develop and implement Audit, Quality and Risk Management initiatives.

Teaching and Mentoring: Teach, facilitate, mentor, and precept student nurses, participating in clinical supervision programmes.

Key Working Relationships

Work alongside Band 6.5 and Band 7 nurses, supported by a Band 7 Team Leader, Matron, and Senior Nurses. Manage a team of Band 3 Nursing Assistants and Band 5 and 6 nurses. Collaborate with the clinical practice facilitator team for staff training and development. Build relationships with the ED medical team, management team, and senior operations team.

* Care Planning: Ensure appropriate patient care plans, coordinate discharge arrangements, and supervise junior staff.
* Information Processing: Use electronic patient records and ensure accurate data collection.

* Financial Management: Manage resources effectively, ensuring appropriate staffing and prudent use of bank and agency staff.
* People Management: Provide nursing leadership, supervise team members, develop management skills, participate in recruitment and appraisal processes, and monitor performance.


Person specification


Knowledge & Qualifications

* Registered Nurse Part 1, 2 or relevant section of the register
* A&E Course/Capital Nurse QIS
* Degree
* Completion of RCN Level 1 and Level 2 Competencies
* Completion of NMTNG Level 2 Competencies
* ALS course
* Triage trained


Experience

* Substantial experience in Emergency Nursing – part of which may be at Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse level in an acute Emergency department
* Leadership experience – leading clinical areas without supervision
* Mentoring and supporting junior staff


Communication

* Communicates effectively verbally, in writing and in electronic formats


Personal And People Development

* Demonstrates evidence of professional development in line with KSF, maintains updated Portfolio
* Demonstrates an awareness of the role of preceptor/facilitator
* Reflective in Practice


Quality

* Demonstrates understanding of principles of Clinical Governance, e.g. Risk Management, audit & quality


Provision of care to meet health and wellbeing needs

* Articulates reasons for desire to work in this clinical area
