Lead Electrical Engineer – Please contact matthew.leaning@boss-energy.co
An innovative clean‑energy organisation is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support the development of next‑generation energy systems and to contribute to customer project delivery.
This role is ideal for someone who wants to make a meaningful impact on the transition to low‑carbon energy and who enjoys working across both product development and real‑world site projects.
The successful candidate will take ownership of electrical design activities, lead test campaigns for new products, and support customer deployments. You will collaborate with a multi‑disciplinary engineering team to evaluate electrical strategies, overcome design challenges, and drive high performance in commercial applications.
Key Responsibilities
* Serve as the technical authority for electrical engineering, acting as the primary point of contact for all electrical systems across product development and customer projects.
* Support product and site teams with technical decisions, hardware selection, power strategies, and coordination across engineering and customer interfaces.
* Lead the electrical architecture, specification, and detailed design of core systems, including internal layouts, interfaces, protection systems, and power distribution panels.
* Create, review, and maintain all key electrical documentation, such as system specifications, schematics, single‑line diagrams, interface definitions, technical notes, and installation requirements.
* Collaborate closely with Mechanical, Thermofluid, and Site Engineering teams to define routing, installation constraints, interfaces, and system‑level integration into customer environments.
* Plan, manage, and coordinate external subcontractors and specialists—including designers, site engineers, and consultants—ensuring high‑quality deliverables aligned with project needs.
* Oversee and manage the electrical engineering function as it grows, including line management of engineers or contractors.
* Support procurement and commercial teams by defining technical requirements, reviewing supplier proposals, and contributing electrical expertise to RFQs, contracts, and customer/supplier discussions.
Essential Requirements
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
* Demonstrated experience working as a system‑level electrical engineer responsible for end‑to‑end electrical design rather than isolated component tasks.
* Practical experience producing and reviewing electrical specifications, schematics, and technical documentation, with the ability to communicate effectively with non‑electrical colleagues.
* Experience managing multiple projects and coordinating external subcontractors, ensuring outputs meet technical and schedule requirements.
* Strong understanding of industrial electrical systems, including power distribution, switchgear, transformers, and protection at 400V / 690V in the 1–5MW range.
* Familiarity with electrical industrial standards and regulatory frameworks (UK or equivalent).
* Experience working both on product development and in site‑based project environments, or an understanding of how design decisions impact installation, commissioning, and operation.
* Highly organised, with the ability to own documentation, track actions, and manage interfaces across technical and commercial teams.
* Comfortable operating as the internal electrical authority while knowing when to involve specialist consultants.
Distinguishing Factors (Nice to Have)
* Prior experience acting as a technical owner for electrical systems within a multi‑disciplinary engineering organisation.
* Existing relationships with electrical subcontractors or specialist consultancies (e.g., design houses, protection study providers, commissioning engineers).
* Experience specifying industrial electrical systems, high‑power loads, or similar complex electrical infrastructure.
* Exposure to electrical aspects of industrial energy systems, heat generation, or electrification of process plant.
* Line‑management experience within a small or growing technical team.
* Experience supporting site installation and commissioning activities.
* Familiarity with UK/European electrical standards, grid interfaces, and regulatory frameworks.
