Overview
The Cherwell Hospital is currently looking to recruit an exceptional Pre-Assessment Nurse to provide specialist nursing expertise, facilitating evidence-based patient-centered care and assessment for a defined caseload of pre-assessment patients. To work both independently and collaboratively with a team of nurses and healthcare assistants, enabling them to co-ordinate patients throughout their pre-assessment pathway, with a high level of input into the management and care of patients prior to admission for specified procedures. To act as a resource and to provide education for patients and health care personnel, and to direct the pre-assessment nursing team.
Responsibilities
* Carry out relevant care without direct supervision, working effectively within the multi-disciplinary team.
* Support all members of staff within the Outpatient department, including students of nursing/visiting healthcare professionals.
* Actively participate in the teaching and mentoring of students and junior staff.
* Suggest improvements in care provision, recognizing and challenging poor practice, raising concerns to the relevant agencies where appropriate.
* Ensure that the nursing philosophy of care for Pre-operative assessment is reflected in practice.
* Provide a high standard of nursing care to patients attending the Outpatient department, working within agreed policies and procedures.
* Act as a liaison link with the Multi-disciplinary team and contribute to work involved in the Anesthetic Meeting / Complex MDT meeting, escalating complex patients and helping plan their care.
* Collaborate and consult with the multi-professional health care team and the patient, communicating highly sensitive, complex information.
* Use highly developed communication skills to provide guidance, advice and support to the patient/ward/physio/theatre staff regarding management of their proposed admission and its impact on patient’s/carer’s life.
* Identify and overcome barriers to patient understanding when communicating complex, sensitive, sometimes distressing information.
* Provide verbal and written information to the patient to enable informed consent for treatment, using specialist knowledge.
* Establish partnerships with patients/carers and communicate with them, sometimes in highly distressing or emotional circumstances.
* Provide, receive, interpret and communicate complex information with a range of health care personnel.
* Act as patient’s advocate, ensuring informed consent, privacy and dignity are maintained (NMC).
* Carry out health promotion within the job role utilizing information leaflets and networking with other specialist healthcare staff around the Trust where necessary.
* Critically reflect on own performance through supervision/action learning.
Qualifications and Experience
* Minimum 6 months paid experience in a Pre-op assessment Nurse role in an NHS/private hospital in the past 3 years.
* Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently.
* Flexible and positive attitude.
* A warm, considerate and empathetic character.
